No doubt about it, planning a menu for a crowd is a lot of work. This menu for a classic New England holiday meal will feed ten people. It includes oyster stew for an opener, turkey and stuffing as the main dish, sides, and desserts.

Here is a handy shopping list to take to the store with you so you don’t forget anything.

  • 8 sprigs fresh thyme

  • 8 stalks celery

  • 6 apples, a mixture of Cortland and Golden Delicious

  • 5 Granny Smith apples

  • 4 carrots

  • 4 flat-leaf parsley stems

  • 4 sprigs fresh sage

  • 3 navel oranges

  • 2 medium butternut squash

  • Two 12-ounce bags fresh or frozen cranberries

  • 2 pounds Brussels sprouts

  • 2 cups heavy cream

  • 8 dozen shucked oysters, with juices

  • 20-pound turkey, preferably fresh

  • 1 pound bulk pork sausage

  • 6 cups low-sodium chicken broth

  • 3 tablespoons maple syrup

  • 1 pound close-grained (dense) white sandwich bread

  • 1-1/2 cups pumpkin puree

  • 1-1/4 cups evaporated milk

  • 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth

  • 1/4 cup honey

  • 1 pound vacuum-packed, cooked chestnuts

  • 2 tablespoons cognac

You may already have the following items in your pantry, but check to make sure you have enough:

  • Onions

  • Whole milk

  • Butter

  • Large eggs

  • Sugar

  • Light brown sugar

  • Flour

  • Shortening

  • Lemon juice

  • Bay leaf

  • Sage
