You make this beautifully soft and textured crochet afghan by joining motifs together with a single crochet seam. This crocheted afghan is a wonderful project that you’ll wrap yourself up in for years to come.

  • Yarn: Coats and Clark Red Heart “Light and Lofty” bulky-weight yarn (100% acrylic), Article E708 (6 oz. [170 gm], 148 yds. for solids; 4.5 oz. [127 gm], 110 yds. each skein for multis):

    • 4 skeins of #9372 Antique Rose (A)

    • 3 skeins of #9631 Sage (B)

    • 5 skeins of #9978 Country Club (C)

  • Hook: Crochet hook size M-13 U.S. or size needed to obtain gauge

  • Measurements: Motif = 10 1/4 in. x 10 1/4 in. afghan = 54 in. x 64 in.

  • Gauge: First 2 rnds of motif = 5 1/4 in.

  • Stitches used: Chain stitch (ch), slip stitch (sl st), single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc), reverse single crochet (reverse sc). Puff st: 2 tr (half closed and joined tog) worked in same st .

Make your motif afghan:

  1. Make 20 motifs by following this stitch pattern and diagram:

    1. Motif (make 20):

      With A, ch 4 and close into a ring with 1 sl st in first ch.

    2. Rnd 1 (right side):

      Ch 1, work 12 sc in ring, sl st in first sc to join. Fasten off A, join C.

    3. Rnd 2:

      With C, ch 4 (first tr), tr in same sc, ch 1, puff st in next sc, ch 1 , rep from to around, sl st in turning ch to join. Fasten off C.

    4. Rnd 3:

      With right side facing you, join A in any ch-1 space, ch 3 (first dc), (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same ch-1 space, (ch 2, 2 dc in next ch-1 space) twice, ch 2, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-1 space for corner , rep from to twice, (ch 2, 2 dc in next ch-1 space) twice, ch 2, sl st in top of turning ch to join. Fasten off A.

    5. Rnd 4:

      With right side facing you, join C in any ch-2 corner space, ch 1, (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in ch-2 space, (ch 1, 2 sc in next ch-2 space) 3 times, ch 1 , rep from to around, sl st in first sc to join. Fasten off C.

    6. Rnd 5:

      With right side facing you, join B in any ch-2 corner space, ch 3 (first dc), (dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in same space, skip next sc, dc in each of next 12 sts, skip next sc, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next ch-2 corner space , rep from to twice, skip next sc, dc in each of next 12 sts, skip next sc, sl st in top of turning ch to join. Fasten off B.

  2. With the wrong sides of two motifs facing each other, stitches matched from corner to corner, and working through double thickness, join C in corner ch-1 space, ch 1, sc in blp of each sc across.

  3. Continue joining each motif in the same manner, 5 motifs wide by 6 motifs long.

  4. After you’ve joined all the motifs, make a border of single crochet and reverse single crochet by following this stitch pattern:

    1. Rnd 1:

      With right side of afghan facing you, join C in first dc to the left of corner ch-1 space in top right-hand corner, ch 1, sc evenly around entire afghan, working 3 sc in each corner space, sl st in first sc to join. Fasten off C.

    2. Rnd 2:

      With right side facing you, join A in center sc in top left-hand corner, ch 1, working from left to right, reverse sc in each sc around, sl st in first reverse sc to join. Fasten off A.
