How to Customize the Lock Screen on Your Samsung Galaxy Tab S

By Dan Gookin

The Lock screen is different from the Home screen on your Samsung Galaxy tab, although the two locations share similar traits. As with the Home screen, you can customize the Lock screen. You can change the background, add app launcher shortcuts and info cards, and do all sorts of tricks.

Setting the Lock screen background

The Lock screen wallpaper can be the same image as the Home screen or different. Follow these steps:

  1. Open the Settings app.

  2. Tap the Device tab, and then choose the Wallpaper category from the left side of the screen.

  3. Choose Lock Screen on the right side of the screen.

  4. Select a wallpaper from the scrolling list at the bottom of the screen.

Tap the More Images item to choose an image from the tablet’s photo library. You will need to crop the image before setting it.

  5. Tap the Set Wallpaper or Done button to apply the image.

For the Galaxy Tab 4, work Steps 1 through 3, then choose a wallpaper type from the items displayed: Gallery, Travel Wallpaper, and Wallpapers.

  • Unlike the Home screen, Live Wallpaper cannot be applied to the Lock screen.

  • Travel Wallpaper is a special Lock screen wallpaper option. When selected, the tablet downloads images for “travel recommendations” to use as the Lock screen wallpaper.

Adding Lock screen shortcuts

When the Swipe screen lock is set, you have the option of placing up to five app launcher icons on the Lock screen. You can use these Lock screen shortcuts to both unlock the tablet and immediately start the app: Simply swipe the app launcher icon on the Lock screen.

For example, to unlock the tablet and instantly use its camera, swipe the Camera app icon when you unlock your Tab.

To configure Lock screen shortcuts, heed these steps:

  1. Open the Settings app.

  2. Tap the Device tab, and then choose Lock Screen from the left side of the screen.

  3. On the right side of the screen, slide the Shortcuts Master Control to the on position.

The Master Control is green when it’s on.

  4. Tap the Shortcuts item.

You see the icons that will appear on the Lock screen.

To add another icon, tap the Plus icon. Choose an app to add to the list.

  • To remove an app, long-press it and drag it down to the Delete icon at the bottom of the screen.

  • A maximum of five Lock screen shortcuts can be selected. You can have fewer, if you like. One is the minimum.

  • Lock screen shortcuts appear only when the Swipe screen lock is chosen.

Displaying Lock screen cards

You can configure the Galaxy Tab S to show up-to-date information on the Lock screen. This information appears in the form of a scrolling list of cards across the bottom of the screen.

  2. Tap the Device tab, and choose Lock Screen from the left side of the window.

  3. Choose Lock Screen Card.

  4. Place a green check mark by the cards that you want to appear on the Lock screen.

To disable this feature, uncheck all the items.

You can simply admire the cards, or you can take advantage of their information: Tap a card, such as the new email card, and then unlock the tablet. The app associated with the card opens so you can view additional information.
