Zoom In or Out on a Subject with the PlayBook Camera
The BlackBerry PlayBook camera includes a digital zoom that allows you to make a person or object appear three to four times closer. The camera will always start with a wide angle view, which is often quite acceptable for a snapshot.
To zoom in closer, tap anywhere on the screen image (except on the virtual shutter release) to display the controls. Move the slide up toward the + sign to zoom in, or back toward the – symbol to zoom out. Make your adjustments in small increments; the screen view will lag slightly behind your changes.
The zoom on the PlayBook camera — like those on other tablets and on nearly all smartphones and many simple point-and-shoot cameras — is a digital zoom and not an optical zoom.
An optical zoom uses an adjustable optical lens to enlarge or widen the image that comes in to the sensor. A digital zoom works with a non-adjustable lens but instead uses the computer processor to enlarge a portion of the image to make it appear closer. An optical zoom delivers a better quality picture, but if you think about it, where in the world would they stick an adjustable lens in a thin tablet or smartphone?
