How to Set Up Trusted and Restricted Web Sites in Microsoft Internet Explorer
If you know how to set up trusted and restricted Web sites in Windows Vista, you can create an Internet Explorer zone, which is another line of defense for your computer. To keep your computer working at its best, you need to keep it free from malware and other damaging software that can be inadvertently downloaded. You can set up Windows Vista to protect your computer by preventing downloads from sites that you know are likely to contain virus or other software that could damage your computer.
1Double-click the Internet Explorer icon on the Windows desktop or Quick Launch bar.
The Internet Explorer window will open.
2Choose Tools→Internet Options and click the Security tab.
The security tab has many options that allow you to customize the level of security built into Internet Explorer.
3Click the Trusted Sites icon and then click the Sites button.
This will open the Trusted Sites dialog box.
4Enter a URL in the Add This Web Site to the Zone text box for a Web site you want to allow your computer to access.
When you designate a Web site as a Trusted Web Site, you’re indicating that it is always safe to download files from the site. This means that Internet Explorer won’t block any downloads from these sites, so only designate sites that you’re sure about.
5Check the Require Server Verification (https:) check box if desired.
If the Require Server Verification (https:) for All Sites in This Zone check box is selected in the Trusted Sites dialog box, any Trusted site you add must use the https prefix, which indicates that the site has a secure connection.
6Click Add to add the site to the list of Web sites. Repeat steps to add more sites; when you’re done, click Close.
The Trusted Sites dialog boxes will close and take you back to the Internet Options dialog box.
7Click the Restricted Sites icon and then click the Sites button.
The Restricted Sites dialog box will open, which looks exactly like the Trusted Sites dialog box.
8Enter a URL in the Add This Web Site to the Zone text box for a Web site you don't ever want to download from.
When you designate a web site as a Restricted Web sites, you are indicating that the site is likely to contain things that you wouldn’t download to your worst enemy’s computer and so it is never safe to download files from the site. Internet Explorer will automatically block any download attempts from these sites.
9Click Add to add the site to the list of Web sites. Repeat steps to add more sites; when you’re done, click Close and then click OK to close the dialog boxes.
All the dialog boxes will close, and you will go back to the Internet Explorer window.
