Use Twitter to Promote Your Mediation Business

Twitter is a popular social venue where you can and should be active to promote your mediation business. With Twitter, you send tweets, short messages that consist of no more than 140 characters, including spaces. Though these tweets enable you to distribute only snippets of content, you can use them in these ways to generate business and open doors to new opportunities:

  • Drive traffic to your website or blog. Whenever you publish a blog post, tweet about it and include a link to that post. If the link is too long, you can get an abbreviated version of it at bitly.

  • Find out when someone needs a mediator. People who are actively involved in a lawsuit or dispute are likely to tweet about it, and if they do, you’ll be one of the first to hear about it.

  • Demonstrate your mediation skills. Play the peacemaker with people who are engaged in passionate, heated, or even explosive disputes. If you can keep your head and level the discussion’s tone, folks in the “Twitterverse” will think of you whenever they need an intermediary.

  • Network. Use Twitter as a cocktail party or industry event, chatting with people about their business, legal practice, interests, and the challenges they face. It’s cheap, it’s easy, and you don’t have to wear a suit.

To quickly build a network on Twitter, follow the market leaders and their followers. Because it’s customary on Twitter to reciprocate following by following back, you can build an instantaneous network by following someone who has the same market as you and following all of his or her followers.

Use hash tags (#) to flag keywords and hot topics in your market, such as #adr, #mediator, and #mediate. A hash tag appears as a link in your tweet that Twitter users can click to see tweets by others that pertain to that topic.

Lots of people tweeting about the same topic and hash-tagging the term can increase your exposure in the community. (If you need to hash tag a phrase, just run the words together; for example, #basketballmediation.)

On Twitter, you can create a Follow button to add to your site. After logging in, scroll to the bottom of the right pane and click Resources. This takes you to a page where you can create a Follow button, Tweet button, or Widget to add to your website or blog.

Be patient. Your followers and the people you follow on Twitter may not need your services for several years. When they do, however, they’ll know your name and handle and where to find you.
