Social Media Marketing: How to Create a Video Using Instagram

By Jan Zimmerman, Deborah Ng

Many brands are fully embracing Instagram as a social media marketing tool. It’s a purely visual experience, which means you don’t have to worry about clever conversation as much as you would on a platform such as Facebook. The images you display, along with a little descriptive content, should be enough to stimulate engagement. However, Instagram isn’t just for photos. You can also use it as a video platform.

Because Instagram is a mobile platform, you need only a mobile device to take video. In fact, you can take a video using the Instagram platform, or you can upload a video from your mobile device to Instagram.

To take a video using Instagram, follow these steps:

  1. In the Instagram app on your mobile device, select the Camera icon located at the bottom of any Instagram page.

The icon is a square with a circle inside it.

  2. Select the Video Camera icon in the bottom-right of the camera screen that appears.

    The video screen appears.

  3. Hold down the Record button (the red circle) to start recording video.

  4. Let go of the Record button to stop recording.

  5. Select Next in the top-right of the screen to open the Filters screen.

  6. (Optional) Choose a filter from the icons at the bottom of the screen.

You can swipe to scroll through more filters.

  7. Select Next in the top-right of the screen.

    The Share To screen appears.

  8. (Optional) Enter a description of the video in the Write a Caption text box.

  9. Share the video with your community by selecting Share at the bottom of the screen.

To upload a video stored on your mobile device to Instagram, follow these steps:

  1. On your mobile device, select the camera icon located at the bottom of any Instagram page.

  2. In the camera screen that appears, select the Video Camera icon at the bottom-right.

  3. Select the Video Library icon (which looks like two stacked squares), located at the bottom-right of the video screen that appears.

  4. Choose the desired video from the icons that appear at the bottom of the Select & Crop screen, and then select Next at the top-right of the screen.

  5. In the next screen, select the Edit icon (which looks like scissors) to edit your video, if necessary.

Instagram allows video clips of only up to 15 seconds.

  6. Slide the blue markers in the timeline at the bottom of the screen to specify what part of the video you want to use.

  7. Select Next to open the Share To screen.

  8. (Optional) With Followers selected below Share To, enter a description in the Write a Caption text box.

  9. Select Share to give your Instagram community access to the video.
