Before September 2011, anyone registering for Spotify was allowed to choose her own easy-to-remember Spotify username. But Spotify newbies, who log in by using Facebook, automatically get assigned an ugly numerical username instead, such as 111035183.

This username, unattractive as it may seem, is still required for publicizing your Spotify profile. One way to find out your username is by clicking your name at the top-right of the Spotify window and then clicking Profile from the menu to access your public profile. Whatever appears in brackets next to your real name is your Spotify username.

Don’t use Facebook? Or perhaps you want to reach out to people outside your Facebook circle? Your Spotify profile is always accessible from this web address: http://open.spotify.com/user/yourusername.

If you click a link to your address (if they see it in an e-mail or on a website, for example) or type the address directly into a web browser (such as Internet Explorer or Firefox), a Spotify web page opens that automatically launches your profile in the Spotify application.

Because this is an actual web address, it’s very versatile; it automatically becomes formatted as a web link if you stick it in an e-mail or on Instant Messenger, or type it into Twitter.

You also need to know the username when you log into Spotify by using third-party devices such as the Sonos sound system because these devices don’t yet support Facebook logins.
