Things to Avoid when Seeking Advertisers for Your Mom Blog
Finding advertisers for your blog isn’t easy. A ton of factors affect why potential advertisers would say no to you — nearly all of which have nothing to do with you or your blog. The whole hunt for advertisers takes a little bravery, and it definitely takes developing a thick skin to handle some initial rejections.
Budgets may be tight, timing may be off, and/or they may have very strict criteria governing the kinds of websites they can work with. But if you’re really having a hard time getting a response from companies, you may want to ask a friend to give you some feedback about your blog.
Not just any friend, but the friend who would dare to say an honest-but-supportive yes to the question, “Does this dress make my butt look big?”
The following list shows things that are common turn-offs to potential advertisers (and so things you want to avoid):
Strong use of controversial language or profanity: Sad but true, the effects of freedom of speech can certainly limit your revenue. This isn’t true all the time, but happens far more often than not.
Poor site design or navigation: If your site is confusing, or your sidebar is so bloated with buttons and widgets that it’s many pages long, advertisers will fear that their messages may never get noticed in the clutter of your template.
Lack of focus: Even if you’re fairly well focused on a niche, many other blogs may be more focused than you are. Advertisers are always interested in the highest possible percentage of relevant potential customers.
Competitor ads: Having a competitor’s ads already in place can work either for or against you. Sometimes advertisers want to be seen where the competition is, in the same way you always seem to find a McDonald’s next to a Burger King. But if you’re clearly loyal to a company’s competitor, it will probably take a pass on advertising with you.
