Skimming Investment Publications for Stock Information
Increasingly, information about the stock market is migrating to digital venues, including the Web, but don’t overlook traditional media, including newspapers and magazines. Most of the up-to-the-minute and big business news still comes out of the two main daily business papers — the Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times, and their Web sites. Other options include Investor’s Business Daily, a financial newspaper aimed specifically at investors, and the New York Times.
Consider subscribing to a few financial publications and reading them regularly. With most publications, you can choose to access your subscription online or off. You can even have issues delivered to your e-reader instead of receiving a paper copy.
The Wall Street Journal
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) isn’t only one of the best newspapers for financial and business news but also one of the best newspapers in the United States. As such, it provides readers with the information they need to interpret the business news in the context of everything else that’s going on in the world. The Money & Investing section contains analysis and reports on the financial markets, along with stock-market tables that list the most widely held companies. However, the newspaper’s tables are not nearly as informative as they used to be. With a subscription to the paper, you also receive a subscription to the paper’s Web site. There you can find a lot of data for each company, including industry comparisons, news stories, key facts, insider transactions, institutional holdings, and financial statements.
In the midst of a global economy, having a global perspective often helps. Short of sailing across the Atlantic, you can often gain this valuable perspective by reading the Financial Times of London. Although you may read many of the same stories in the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times sees it from a different angle that’s often enlightening for investors.
Investor’s Business Daily
Nicknamed IBD, this daily financial paper aims to help investors make money. Its second section is chock full of charts and data. For each stock, the tables include five IBD ratings on different parts of the business. The paper also provides a section on the IBD 100, an in-depth ranking of the nation’s leading companies based on profit growth, return on equity, sales growth, profit margins, and relative price strength.
