As you solve an equation, you may need to perform the extra step of reducing the fraction to make it easier to find the right answer.\r\n
Multiplying fractions is easy. You just multiply the numerators and then multiply the denominators. Look at the following equation:
\r\n\r\n\r\nYou multiply 1 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 9 (the numerators) and then 2 × 4 × 5 = 40 (the denominators) to result in 9/40.\r\n\r\nOccasionally, when you multiply fractions, you end up with an extremely large fraction that can be simplified or reduced. To express a fraction in its lowest terms means to put it in such a way that you can’t evenly divide the numerator and the denominator by the same number (other than 1).\r\n\r\nA number that you can divide into both the numerator and the denominator is called a common factor. If you have the fraction 6/10, both the numerator (6) and the denominator (10) can be divided by the same number, 2. If you do the division,\r\n\r\n6 ÷ 2 = 3 and 10 ÷ 2 = 5\r\n\r\nyou find that 6/10 can be expressed in the simpler terms of 3/5. You get one 10-minute break between the second and third tests (the mathematics and reading tests). If you opt not to take the optional writing Test, then you get to walk out right after the science test.
\n
Occasionally, the ACT will throw in an extra 20-minute section at the end to test questions for future exams. This section could be English, mathematics, reading, or science. These questions don’t count toward your composite score.
\n"},{"title":"Tips for avoiding mistakes on the ACT","thumb":null,"image":null,"content":"
Taking the ACT requires quite a bit of preparation. If you’ve taken the time to prepare, you don’t want to jeopardize a good score by making a silly mistake. So, be aware of the following catastrophes so that you can prevent them from happening to you.
\n
\n
Losing concentration: When you’re in the middle of an excruciatingly boring reading passage, the worst thing you can do is let your mind drift off to a more pleasant time. Although visualization (picturing yourself doing something relaxing or fun) is a good stress-reduction technique to practice before the exam, it stinks when it comes to helping your ACT score during the test. Even if you have to pinch yourself or snap your wrist with a rubber band to keep from falling asleep or flaking out, stay focused.
\n
Panicking about time:Every section on the ACT begins with directions and a line that tells you how many questions are in the section and, therefore, how many minutes you have per question. The ACT is no big mystery. You can waste a lot of time and drive yourself crazy if you keep flipping pages and counting how many more questions remain. You can do what you can do; that’s all. Looking ahead and panicking are counterproductive and waste time.
\n
\n
Messing up numbering on the answer grid:Suppose that you decide to postpone doing Question 11, hoping that inspiration will strike later. But now, you accidentally put the answer to Question 12 in the blank for Question 11, and mess up all the numbers from that point on. After you answer Question 40, you suddenly realize that you just filled in bubble number 39 and have one bubble left — aaargh! It’s easy to say, “don’t panic,” but chances are your blood pressure will go sky-high, especially when you eyeball the clock and see that only one minute remains.
\n
If you have a good eraser with you (and you should), the wrong answers on the answer grid should take only a few seconds to erase. But how on earth are you going to resolve all of those problems and reread and re-answer all of the questions? You’re not, because you took the following advice: When you choose an answer, circle that answer in your test booklet first and then fill in the answer on the answer grid. Doing so takes you a mere nanosecond and helps you not only in this panic situation but also as you go back and double-check your work.
\n
\n
Rubbernecking: Rubbernecking is craning your neck around to see how everyone else is doing. Forget those bozos. You have too much to do on your own to waste precious seconds checking out anyone else. After you have the exam booklet in front of you, don’t look at anything but it and your watch until time is called.
\n
Cheating: Cheating on the ACT is a loser’s game — it’s just plain stupid. Apart from the legal, moral, and ethical questions, let’s talk practicality: You can’t predict what types of grammatical mistakes will show up in the questions; what are you going to do, copy a textbook on the palm of your hand? All the math formulas that you need can’t fit onto the bottom of your shoe.
\n
Worrying about previous sections: Think of the ACT as four separate lifetimes. You’re reborn three times, so you get three more chances to “do it right.” Every time the proctor says, “Your time is up. Please turn to the next test and begin,” you get a fresh start. The ACT rules are very strict: You can’t go back to a previous section and finish work there or change some of your answers. If you try to do so, the proctor will catch you, and you’ll be in a world of hurt.
\n
\n
Worrying about the hard problems:The ACT contains a couple of challenging problems and questions. Forget about them. Almost no one gets them right, anyway. You can often miss a question or two in each section and still receive a 35 or 36. And ridiculously few students receive 36s every year. If you get into the 30s, you’re in a super-elite club of only a few percent of the thousands of students who take the ACT annually.
\n
Just accept the fact that you either won’t get to or can’t answer a few of the hard questions and learn to live with your imperfection. When you do encounter a hard question, don’t waste too much time on it. See if you can use common sense to eliminate any answers. Then mark your best guess from the remaining choices.
\n
\n
Forgetting to double-check: If you finish a test early, go back and double-check the questions you’ve marked for future review. Questions that you think you answered too quickly or for which made a few assumptions as you eliminated answers are good options for checking twice if you have a couple minutes remaining at the end of the section. Be sure to mark questions along the way (in your test booklet, not on the bubble sheet, to avoid machine scoring errors) so you’ll know exactly which ones to turn to during those last precious moments until the proctor calls time.
\n
\n"},{"title":"Translating math word problems","thumb":null,"image":null,"content":"
When you see a word problem on the ACT math test, you may feel a little lost at first. Follow these steps to get your rest and set up an easy morning — all part of getting yourself ready.
\n
\n
Don’t study anything. You’ve prepped what you can, and now you need your rest. There’s nothing to cram, anyway: The SAT is based on skills, like hitting a volleyball, and stamina, like running a half-marathon. By now you’ve built these up, and you can’t improve these the night before. Instead, get your rest.
\n
Stay in. There will be another game or party. Instead, take it easy, read a book, and plan on getting to bed early. Careful if you watch TV — if you catch a long movie or binge a TV show, it’ll be late before you know it, and you’ll sacrifice your good night’s sleep.
\n
Have a good, normal dinner. This isn’t the night for an exotic gastronomic experience. Have that after the exam. Right now, you don’t need to risk the distraction of an upset stomach.
\n
Get your snacks together. You need a couple of good, healthy snacks that don’t have to go in the fridge and aren’t too sugary. Pack a bottle of water, but not soda or juice, which is also sugary. Diet soda is fine if that’s your normal go-to.
\n
Get your forms together. Make sure you can access your registration forms. Even if you’re testing at your school, you may need proof that you’re registered to this particular session, so have this ready. You don’t want to augment (add to) your stress by searching through your emails and saved docs.
\n
Get your materials together. You don’t need a calculator, and the testing center provides scratch paper. Just make sure you have a few sharpened no. 2 pencils ready to go.
\n
Check where you’re taking the exam. Your exam isn’t always at your school, so confirm where it is and get directions. If you don’t drive, make sure you have a way to get there.
\n
\n"},{"title":"What to do the morning of the SAT","thumb":null,"image":null,"content":"
Now you’re even closer. Follow these steps for a smooth sail through test day.
\n
\n
Still don’t study anything. Focus on a smooth testing experience, not the material itself. Your skills are solid from the steps in this book, and there’s nothing to memorize anyway. Besides, there’s no time.
\n
Have a good, normal breakfast. The breakfast you have every other day will work today. Bigger is fine, but don’t eat or drink anything you don’t normally have.
\n
Leave your calculator, notes, and books at home. As you know, the SAT provides scratch paper and an on-screen calculator, so you don’t need to bring either one. You won’t have time to check your notes or books, and you shouldn’t need to anyway.
\n
\n"},{"title":"During the exam","thumb":null,"image":null,"content":"
Now it’s show time! You so got this. Just keep in mind the basic strategies.
\n
\n
Stick to the one-minute-per-question rule. Some questions take longer than others, so this rule isn’t exact. The point is that you don’t spend five minutes on one question, then leave four questions unanswered at the end.
\n
Check the review screen. Keep an eye on the review screen for questions that you skipped or flagged to return to. Make sure you don’t end the module with questions unanswered — at the very least, jump in there and take a guess! Also, if you plan to return to a question, the flag is your reminder, so this way you don’t forget it — assuming you have the minutes to return to it.
\n
Only flag the questions you plan to revisit. Don’t flag every question that you have some doubt on! With three minutes remaining, and 12 questions flagged, how do you know which answers are probably right and which you need to go back and revisit? If the answer is probably right, then don’t flag it. Instead, dedicate your remaining time to revisiting answers that need more attention.
\n
\n"},{"title":"How to handle the SAT reading and writing section","thumb":null,"image":null,"content":"
You’ve practiced these, so there’s nothing new here today. You’re good to go.
\n
\n
Work the faster questions before the time-intensive questions. You know which question types go faster from taking your practice tests, and you’ve explored skipping around on a practice test — right?
\n
Cross off wrong answers. Cover the answer choices, read the question, read the text, answer the question yourself, and cross off wrong answers. With your own answer in mind, the right answer doesn’t match, but the three wrong answers stick out like sore thumbs, so cross ‘em off and go with the remaining answer, quickly. The online exam allows you to cross off answers on screen, so what more do you need? Just be sure to stick with your answer, and don’t doubt it based on the answer choices, because three of those are traps. You’ve practiced this strategy also, right?
\n
\n"},{"title":"During the break","thumb":null,"image":null,"content":"
Now catch your mental breath. Plus you know exactly what to do.
\n
\n
Look for the concept. The actual math is always simple, and you never have to go through lines of scratch work — what one student called, “stubby pencil.” The question is based on the math concept, not the number crunching. If you’re knee-deep in the math, then you missed the math concept, so step out of that trap: Guess an answer, flag the question for review, and move on. You may spot the concept when you return to the question, but if you don’t, at least it didn’t cost you a lot of time.
\n
\n"}],"videoInfo":{"videoId":null,"name":null,"accountId":null,"playerId":null,"thumbnailUrl":null,"description":null,"uploadDate":null}},"sponsorship":{"sponsorshipPage":false,"backgroundImage":{"src":null,"width":0,"height":0},"brandingLine":"","brandingLink":"","brandingLogo":{"src":null,"width":0,"height":0},"sponsorAd":"","sponsorEbookTitle":"","sponsorEbookLink":"","sponsorEbookImage":{"src":null,"width":0,"height":0}},"primaryLearningPath":"Advance","lifeExpectancy":"Two years","lifeExpectancySetFrom":"2024-06-17T00:00:00+00:00","dummiesForKids":"no","sponsoredContent":"no","adInfo":"","adPairKey":[]},"status":"publish","visibility":"public","articleId":299987},{"headers":{"creationTime":"2016-03-27T16:51:46+00:00","modifiedTime":"2024-07-27T19:25:32+00:00","timestamp":"2024-07-27T21:01:09+00:00"},"data":{"breadcrumbs":[{"name":"Academics & The Arts","_links":{"self":"https://dummies-api.dummies.com/v2/categories/33662"},"slug":"academics-the-arts","categoryId":33662},{"name":"Study Skills & Test Prep","_links":{"self":"https://dummies-api.dummies.com/v2/categories/33772"},"slug":"study-skills-test-prep","categoryId":33772},{"name":"CISSP","_links":{"self":"https://dummies-api.dummies.com/v2/categories/33777"},"slug":"cissp","categoryId":33777}],"title":"CISSP For Dummies Cheat Sheet","strippedTitle":"cissp for dummies cheat sheet","slug":"cissp-for-dummies-cheat-sheet","canonicalUrl":"","seo":{"metaDescription":"The CISSP exam is demanding and can take up to three hours to complete. So, make sure that you’ve prepared yourself well for your upcoming CISSP exam. This may seem a bit overwhelming, but take things one step at a time and be sure to heed the following tips for CISSP exam success:
\n
\n
\n
Register now. Go online and register for the CISSP exam as soon as possible. Committing yourself to a test date is the best cure for procrastination and setting your date can help you plan and focus your study efforts. If, after scheduling your exam, you realize there’s absolutely no way you’ll be ready by your test date — or you’re otherwise unable to make your test date, you can simply reschedule. Just be sure to reschedule — no-shows forfeit their exam fee.
\n
\n
\n
Make a 60-Day study plan. After you register for the CISSP exam, commit yourself to a 60-day study plan. Of course, your work experience and professional reading should span a much greater period, but for your final preparations leading up to the CISSP exam, plan on a 60-day period of intense study.
\n
\n
\n
Get organized and read. A wealth of security information is available for the CISSP candidate. However, studying everything is impractical. Instead, get organized, determine your strengths and weaknesses, and then read. You’ll find a lot of study materials on the ISC2 website.
\n
\n
\n
Join a Study Group. Joining a study group or creating your own can help you stay focused and provide a wealth of information from the broad perspectives and experiences of other security professionals. You can find a study group, discussion forums, and many other helpful resources at CCCure.org. Also, your local chapter of the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA) may be sponsoring CISSP study groups. You can find their contact information at the ISSA website.
\n
\n
\n"},{"title":"CISSP exam day tips","thumb":null,"image":null,"content":"
The CISSP exam is demanding, but if you’ve worked your way through the Common Body of Knowledge and know your stuff when it comes to areas such as network security and disaster recovery, you should do fine. Here are some tips to prepare for exam day:
\n
\n
\n
Get a good night’s rest. The night before the exam isn’t the time to do any last-minute cramming. Getting a good night’s rest is essential.
\n
\n
\n
Dress comfortably. You should dress in attire that’s comfortable and appropriate — remember, this is a three-hour exam for professional certification.
\n
\n
\n
Eat a good meal. No matter how anxious you may be feeling, try to get something down before the exam. You have up to three hours to complete the CISSP exam — that’s a long time to go on an empty stomach.
\n
\n
\n
Bring your photo ID. You need to bring your driver’s license, government-issued ID, or passport — these are the only forms of ID that are accepted.
\n
\n
\n
Bring snacks and drinks. If your testing center allows it, consider bringing a small snack and a few drinks (water, juice, or soda) to get you through the exam. Be sure you know the testing center’s rules and procedures for taking breaks and eating/drinking during the exam.
\n
\n
\n
Bring prescription or over-the-counter medications. Again, check with your testing center and notify the test administrator if you’re taking any prescription medication that must be taken during the exam. Nothing can ruin your chances of succeeding on the CISSP exam like a medical emergency! Also, if you’re taking any over-the-counter meds, such as acetaminophen, nasal spray, or antacids to eliminate any annoying inconveniences such as headaches, heartburn, or a gastrointestinal malady, be sure to take them before you start the exam.
\n
\n
\n
Leave your mobile phone behind or turn it off. Turn off your mobile phone and anything else that goes beep or buzz.
\n
\n
\n
Take frequent breaks. Three hours is a long time. Be sure to get up and walk around during the exam, if permitted. If not, at least stretch your legs, curl your toes, crack your knuckles, rest your eyes (but don’t fall asleep!), roll your neck — or whatever you need to do (within reason) to keep the blood flowing throughout your body. Be sure to take a few short breaks during the exam.
\n
\n
\n"}],"videoInfo":{"videoId":null,"name":null,"accountId":null,"playerId":null,"thumbnailUrl":null,"description":null,"uploadDate":null}},"sponsorship":{"sponsorshipPage":false,"backgroundImage":{"src":null,"width":0,"height":0},"brandingLine":"","brandingLink":"","brandingLogo":{"src":null,"width":0,"height":0},"sponsorAd":"","sponsorEbookTitle":"","sponsorEbookLink":"","sponsorEbookImage":{"src":null,"width":0,"height":0}},"primaryLearningPath":"Advance","lifeExpectancy":"One year","lifeExpectancySetFrom":"2024-07-27T00:00:00+00:00","dummiesForKids":"no","sponsoredContent":"no","adInfo":"","adPairKey":[]},"status":"publish","visibility":"public","articleId":208263},{"headers":{"creationTime":"2016-03-27T16:48:26+00:00","modifiedTime":"2024-06-10T21:03:22+00:00","timestamp":"2024-06-11T00:01:05+00:00"},"data":{"breadcrumbs":[{"name":"Academics & The Arts","_links":{"self":"https://dummies-api.dummies.com/v2/categories/33662"},"slug":"academics-the-arts","categoryId":33662},{"name":"Study Skills & Test Prep","_links":{"self":"https://dummies-api.dummies.com/v2/categories/33772"},"slug":"study-skills-test-prep","categoryId":33772},{"name":"LSAT","_links":{"self":"https://dummies-api.dummies.com/v2/categories/33786"},"slug":"lsat","categoryId":33786}],"title":"LSAT For Dummies Cheat Sheet","strippedTitle":"lsat for dummies cheat sheet","slug":"lsat-for-dummies-cheat-sheet","canonicalUrl":"","seo":{"metaDescription":"Learn how to have a successful LSAT testing experience and get some tips for all sections of the test, including the writing sample.","noIndex":0,"noFollow":0},"content":"A score on the Law School Admission Test (LSAT for short) is a requirement for admission to almost all U.S. law schools. Here’s an overview of what to expect on the Securities Industry Essentials exam:
\n
\n
The underwriting process (how new securities come to market)
\n
Common and preferred stock
\n
Corporate bonds and U.S. government securities
\n
Securities issued by local governments (municipal bonds)
\n
Investment companies (including mutual and closed-end funds)
\n
Direct participation programs (limited partnerships)
\n
Options
\n
Customer accounts
\n
Analyzing the benefits and risks associated with investments; making appropriate recommendations to customers
\n
Following how new securities are brought to the market and how existing securities are traded in the market
\n
Risk considerations and income-tax implications that stock market investors face
\n
Rules and regulations governing the purchase and sale of securities and the registered representative’s responsibility for maintaining accurate record-keeping
\n
\n
The following table lists the number of questions devoted to each topic.
\n
\n
\n
\n
Distribution of SIE Exam Questions
\n
\n
\n
Topic
\n
Number of Questions
\n
Percent of Exam
\n
\n
\n
Knowledge of capital markets
\n
12
\n
16%
\n
\n
\n
Understanding products and their risks
\n
33
\n
44%
\n
\n
\n
Understanding trading, customer accounts, and prohibited activities
\n
23
\n
31%
\n
\n
\n
Overview of regulatory framework
\n
7
\n
9%
\n
\n
\n
Total
\n
75
\n
100%
\n
\n
\n
\n
Each of these topics falls under multiple areas of study. For example, to correctly answer questions that address the topic of handling customer accounts, you have to know enough about different types of stocks, bonds, and so on to be able to guide your customers, including which investments are more beneficial to retirees and which work better for investors who are just entering the workforce.
\n"},{"title":"Great study habits for SIE exam prep","thumb":null,"image":null,"content":"
Make no mistake, the Securities Industry Essentials exam is not easy. What compounds the difficulty of this exam is the fact that you may be working full time while studying, and you may have to take the exam in a relatively short amount of time.
\n
Using correct study habits will greatly increase your chances of passing the SIE exam the first time and will let you put it in the rearview mirror. These ten study habits can help you along your way:
\n
\n
Put in the hours: The SIE exam is a bear of an exam and will require a lot of hours on your part. Set yourself session and daily goals (such as finishing a chapter, finishing and reviewing a test, and so on).
\n
Study every single day: Most of the information on this exam is going to be new to you (and most other people), so don’t take any days off unless absolutely necessary because the information will be too easy to forget.
\n
Take and review lots of practice questions: It’s one thing to know the information on the exam but another thing to know how to answer questions. I would suggest that once you have a relatively good handle on the information, you spend half of your study time taking and reviewing tests and half of your study time reading your exam study book.
\n
Use sticky notes: Use sticky notes as placeholders in your SIE exam study book. Put sticky notes in every location in your book where you need additional work. In the beginning, your book will be covered in notes. Once you fully understand the information next to your sticky note, remove that note and go to the next one. Keep working your way through the book, focusing on studying the areas next to the sticky notes. Ideally, prior to your exam, there will only be a few (or no) sticky notes left in your book.
\n
Find a quiet place with no distractions: You really need to focus on this exam if you stand any chance of passing. Get away from the TV, family members, your phone, and your computer (unless you are using it to study for the SIE exam). Lock yourself in your room, go to the library, sit in your car, or go wherever you need to go to be able to focus.
\n
Carry a review book or equivalent with you everywhere: Time management is very important. You never know when you could squeeze in an extra 10 or 20 minutes of study time. If you have your book or flashcards with you, you can take advantage of that time.
\n
Make your own flashcards: Make flashcards of the information you need to commit to memory. Keep them with you all the time so that you can look at them when you have extra time. When you fully understand (and will remember) the information on one flashcard, take it out of your stack.
\n
Take short breaks: They say that most people are good at focusing for about 20 minutes at a time. Obviously, everyone is different and you may find that you can focus for an hour or so. When you get to the point where you’ve just read a paragraph or question and you need to read it again because you forgot what you just read, take a break because you are wasting time. A 5- to 10-minute break will usually be enough to get you back on track.
\n
Know what you don’t know: Don’t waste your time studying material that you fully understand. Spend your time focusing on the material you don’t understand.
\n
If possible, record your notes for playback: There are applications for your smartphone, tablet, and computer that allow you to record audio. When you get tired of looking at your notes or sampling practice questions, take some time to record yourself reading your notes or sections of your book. Then put on your headphones and listen to the recordings when you have extra time or are just tired of looking at your book.
\n
\n"},{"title":"Looking ahead: Corequisite exams for the SIE exam","thumb":null,"image":null,"content":"
Certainly, the SIE exam is a great starting point, but you’ll need to pass another exam or so to be able to be able to be licensed to work in the securities industry.
\n
Judging from the many classes I have taught, most people are going to move on to take the Series 7 (Series 7 Top-Off Exam, which is the General Securities Representative Exam). If the testing center makes a mistake and loses your reservation, you need to show that you’ve actually reserved this time.
\n
Comfortable clothes: Testing centers tend to crank the AC, and the last thing you want is to be shivering during the exam. Wear two layers of long-sleeved clothing, and you can always remove one if you’re warm. Note that you’re not allowed to wear a jacket in the testing center.
\n
Testing center address: Put the testing center address in your phone, or write it on a note, or print it out so that you can grab it in the morning. You may also want to scope out the area ahead of time and find parking: A map satellite view is great for this.
\n
Photo ID: The GRE testing centers sport some tight security. You may not be allowed to take the test unless you can verify who you are.
\n
Water and a snack: Your break is 10 minutes, some of which is spent checking back in when you return from the restroom. You don’t have time to go buy a snack, and you may not want the drinking fountain water. Bring your own water and a snack so you can use your precious few minutes getting refreshed. Some testing centers give you access to your locker during your break, and some don’t. But the proctors always tell you where you can leave your personal items.
\n
\n
The GRE proctors are also strict about the items you can’t bring into the testing center. If you have any of these items with you, you’ll be asked to keep them in your locker while taking the exam:
\n
\n
Books and study notes: You’re not allowed to use books or notes, so why bring them? Leave them in your car or at home. One student almost had his scores cancelled because he took a text book out of his locker during his break. Fortunately, he didn’t open the book, so he was allowed to keep his scores.
\n
Phone, wallet, and purse: These stay in the locker while you’re taking the GRE.
\n
Calculator: If you bring a calculator, it too stays in the locker. The GRE provides an on-screen calculator for the quantitative reasoning sections, so you don’t need to bring one.
\n
Your own scratch paper: The proctors will take anything you bring and provide their own scratch paper for you to use.
\n
\n"},{"title":"Computer tips for the GRE","thumb":null,"image":null,"content":"
You’ve taken a couple computer-based practice exams, right? Just remember these key points:
\n
\n
You can go back and forth through the section. Within each section, each question is worth the same. If you’re stuck on a question, take a guess, mark it for review, and come back to it later.
\n
Keep an eye on the clock. On the GRE, with 35 minutes per quantitative section and 30 minutes per verbal, it’s easy to get distracted by your work and run out of time. Stick with one minute per question, which allows a little time to slip, and you should be about halfway through each section at about 15 minutes.
\n
Practice using the software. Practice GRE software is available for free from ETS, and it perfectly mimics the actual exam, so be sure to explore that and see how it works before the day of the exam.
\n
\n"},{"title":"Answering multiple-choice questions","thumb":null,"image":null,"content":"
Most GRE questions are multiple choice, and some may have more than one possible answer. These questions with more than one possible answer are easy to spot, because the answer choices are marked with squares instead of ovals, and the directions say, “Pick two answers” or “Pick all correct answers,” or you may have to complete text that has two or three missing words.
\n
Either way, keep these tips in mind:
\n
\n
If you don’t know the answer, rule out as many obviously incorrect choices as possible and guess from the remaining choices.
\n
Again, because students forget, Don’t spend more than one minute on any one question. Guess an answer, mark the question for review, and come back to it at the end of the section. As long as you have time left, you can go back to any questions in that section.
\n
Guessing an answer is better than leaving the question unanswered. A wrong answer counts the same as no answer, so there’s no harm in guessing. You may as well throw the mental dice and try to get it right — just mark it for review and come back to it later.
\n
\n"}],"videoInfo":{"videoId":null,"name":null,"accountId":null,"playerId":null,"thumbnailUrl":null,"description":null,"uploadDate":null}},"sponsorship":{"sponsorshipPage":false,"backgroundImage":{"src":null,"width":0,"height":0},"brandingLine":"","brandingLink":"","brandingLogo":{"src":null,"width":0,"height":0},"sponsorAd":"","sponsorEbookTitle":"","sponsorEbookLink":"","sponsorEbookImage":{"src":null,"width":0,"height":0}},"primaryLearningPath":"Advance","lifeExpectancy":"One year","lifeExpectancySetFrom":"2023-05-17T00:00:00+00:00","dummiesForKids":"no","sponsoredContent":"no","adInfo":"","adPairKey":[]},"status":"publish","visibility":"public","articleId":298853},{"headers":{"creationTime":"2024-05-10T14:24:25+00:00","modifiedTime":"2024-05-10T14:24:25+00:00","timestamp":"2024-05-10T15:01:08+00:00"},"data":{"breadcrumbs":[{"name":"Academics & The Arts","_links":{"self":"https://dummies-api.dummies.com/v2/categories/33662"},"slug":"academics-the-arts","categoryId":33662},{"name":"Study Skills & Test Prep","_links":{"self":"https://dummies-api.dummies.com/v2/categories/33772"},"slug":"study-skills-test-prep","categoryId":33772},{"name":"GRE","_links":{"self":"https://dummies-api.dummies.com/v2/categories/33785"},"slug":"gre","categoryId":33785}],"title":"GRE Prep For Dummies Cheat Sheet","strippedTitle":"gre prep for dummies cheat sheet","slug":"gre-prep-for-dummies-cheat-sheet","canonicalUrl":"","seo":{"metaDescription":"Get the edge in GRE Prep with this cheat sheet.
So you have roughly 1 minute per question. Every question you answer correctly is worth 1 point toward your raw score on the test. Employing some test-taking strategies can help ensure that you answer all the questions as best you can. The following sections provide some tips to keep in mind.
\n
Not all ACT math questions are created equally. Generally speaking, the questions increase in difficulty as you proceed from Question 1 to Question 60. Here’s the general breakdown of difficulty:
\n
\n
Easy: Questions 1 through 20
\n
Medium: Questions 21 through 40
\n
Hard: Questions 41 through 60
\n
\n"},{"title":"Take two passes on the ACT Math test","thumb":null,"image":null,"content":"
To maximize your time and confidence, use the tried-and-true strategy of taking two passes over the ACT, particularly when working the math section. Here’s what to do for each of the passes:
\n
\n
Pass 1: Start with Question 1 and work your way forward, answering questions that look relatively quick and easy and jumping over those that look difficult or time-consuming.
\n
Pass 2: After you’ve answered all the quick and easy questions, circle back to the first question you skipped over and work your way forward to the end again.
\n
\n
This test-taking strategy maximizes the number of questions you can answer with confidence. It also helps you save time for the tough questions, which usually take more than 1 minute to solve. And don’t forget that you get an average of 1 minute per question!
\n
Every ACT math section includes a few questions that are practically begging for you to skip over them. For example, you may consider passing over questions that
\n
\n
Are very long and wordy.
\n
Seem purposely confusing and don’t make a lot of sense even the second time you read them.
\n
Have large or complicated numbers that involve long or difficult calculations.
\n
\n
Of course, not every problem with the preceding characteristics is as difficult as it looks. But as you run across problems like these, feel free to jump over them — even on Pass 2. If you have time at the end of the test, you can always try to pick off a few of these questions.
\n
But if you’re going to skip questions, you may as well skip these hairy beasts. However, do try to fill in an answer for every question in the end. (See the upcoming section for details on how best to guess on the ACT.)
\n"},{"title":"Guess wisely on the rest of the ACT test","thumb":null,"image":null,"content":"
On the ACT math test, you don’t lose points from your raw score when you fill in a wrong answer. So strategically you should fill in every answer, even if you have to make a wild guess.
\n
Of course, you don’t want to guess on math questions that you may be able to answer correctly — especially among the test’s earlier questions, which tend to be easier. And keep in mind that an educated guess is always better than a wild guess. So whenever possible, rule out answers that you know are wrong. Keep track of these wrong answers by crossing them out in your test booklet.
\n
Don’t guess at any answers while you’re still on the first pass (see the previous section, “Take two passes on the ACT Math test,” where I discuss tackling the test in two separate passes). Instead, begin guessing on your second pass of the test. At this point, if you can confidently rule out a couple of answers but don’t know how to proceed with a question, you can save time by guessing at the answer and moving on to the next question.
\n
Keep track of the questions that you guess on. If you have time at the end of the math test — or if you have an unexpected brainstorm — you can revisit these questions and make a more educated guess.
\n
Monitor your time closely, and when your 60 minutes of math are almost up, take a moment to guess at all the remaining answers — don’t leave any blank. With a bit of luck, you may pick up a few additional points on some of these questions.
\n
Remember that on the ACT, no points are taken off for wrong answers. So, be sure to answer every question on the ACT, even if you have to guess.
\n"},{"title":"Using charts and pictures to answer ACT math questions","thumb":null,"image":null,"content":"
Some math problems are difficult to visualize, so sketching out a chart or picture of the given information can help you arrive at the correct answer when taking the math portion of the ACT. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
\n
\n
\n
If you’re a visual person — an artist or a photographer, for example — start sketching sooner rather than later.
\n
\n
\n
Your sketch doesn’t have to be perfect. Just seeing how the question looks on paper may help you out.
\n
\n
\n
When you’ve got the beginnings of a sketch, step back from it and decide what kind of problem you’re trying to solve. For example, do you need arithmetic, algebra, or geometry to solve it?
\n
\n
\n
Consider the following example question:
\n
Jason likes to begin his workout with a run from his house to the gym. He runs 4 miles due west, then makes a left turn and runs 2 miles due south to arrive at the gym. Which of the following is the best approximation of the shortest distance from Jason’s house to the gym?
\n

(A) 4.2 miles

\n

(B) 4.5 miles

\n

(C) 4.8 miles

\n

(D) 5.2 miles

\n

(E) 5.5 miles

\n
At first reading, you may not see exactly what this question is asking. Making the following sketch helps put it into perspective:
\n

\n
Now you can see that this problem is a geometry problem with a right triangle. You already know the lengths of the two legs, and you want to know the distance from the house to the gym, which is the hypotenuse. So use the Pythagorean theorem, as follows:
\n
a2 + b2 = c2\r\n42 + 22 = c2\r\n 16 + 4 = c2\r\n 20 = c2\r\n √20 = c\r\n
\n
Use your calculator to find that
\n
√20 = 4.472\r\n
\n
So the right answer is Choice (B).
\n"},{"title":"Solving math word problems on the ACT","thumb":null,"image":null,"content":"
A word problem (also called a story problem or a problem in a setting) gives you information in words rather than in just equations and numbers. To answer a math word problem on the ACT, you have to translate the provided information into one or more equations and then solve.
\n
You can solve some word problems fairly easily. Jotting down the numbers in the problem can be useful to help get you focused and moving in the right direction. The following example word problem shows you how:
\n
A charity is holding a lottery to raise money. A book of 20 tickets sells for $70.00, and a book of 50 tickets sells for $150.00. How much do you save on each ticket by buying a book of 50 tickets rather than a book of 20 tickets?
\n

(A) $0.10

\n

(B) $0.20

\n

(C) $0.25

\n

(D) $0.50

\n

(E) $0.75

\n
If you’re not immediately sure how to proceed, jot down the numbers in an orderly fashion:
\n

Book of 50 $150 50

\n

Book of 20 $70 20

\n
This step only takes a moment and gets your brain moving. When you organize the information in this way, you may see that the next step involves division:
\n

Book of 50 $150 ÷ 50 = $3.00

\n

Book of 20 $70 ÷ 20 = $3.50

\n
Now you can easily see that buying a book of 50 tickets saves $0.50 per ticket, so the correct answer is Choice (D).
\n"}],"videoInfo":{"videoId":null,"name":null,"accountId":null,"playerId":null,"thumbnailUrl":null,"description":null,"uploadDate":null}},"sponsorship":{"sponsorshipPage":false,"backgroundImage":{"src":null,"width":0,"height":0},"brandingLine":"","brandingLink":"","brandingLogo":{"src":null,"width":0,"height":0},"sponsorAd":"","sponsorEbookTitle":"","sponsorEbookLink":"","sponsorEbookImage":{"src":null,"width":0,"height":0}},"primaryLearningPath":"Advance","lifeExpectancy":"Two Armed Services Multiplying and Reducing Fractions on the ASVAB Math Knowledge Test

Article / Updated 09-11-2024

Some questions on the ASVAB Mathematics Knowledge subtest may involve multiplying fractions. As you solve an equation, you may need to perform the extra step of reducing the fraction to make it easier to find the right answer. Multiplying fractions is easy. You just multiply the numerators and then multiply the denominators. Look at the following equation: You multiply 1 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 9 (the numerators) and then 2 × 4 × 5 = 40 (the denominators) to result in 9/40. Occasionally, when you multiply fractions, you end up with an extremely large fraction that can be simplified or reduced. To express a fraction in its lowest terms means to put it in such a way that you can’t evenly divide the numerator and the denominator by the same number (other than 1). A number that you can divide into both the numerator and the denominator is called a common factor. If you have the fraction 6/10, both the numerator (6) and the denominator (10) can be divided by the same number, 2. If you do the division, 6 ÷ 2 = 3 and 10 ÷ 2 = 5 you find that 6/10 can be expressed in the simpler terms of 3/5. You can’t reduce (simplify) 3/5 any further; the only other number that both the numerator and denominator can be divided by is 1, so the result would be the same, 3/5. Remember, you can’t use a calculator on the ASVAB, so multiplying large numbers can take extra steps and valuable time. You can make your work easier by canceling out common factors before multiplying. For example, suppose you have the following problem Multiplying the numerators (20 × 14) = 280, then multiplying the denominators (21 × 25) = 525, and finally reducing the fraction may require you to write out three or more separate multiplication/division problems. But you can save time if a numerator and denominator have common factors. Here, the numerator of the first fraction (20) and the denominator of the second (25) have a common factor of 5, so you can divide both of those numbers by 5: Your problem becomes The numerator of the second fraction (14) and the denominator of the first fraction (21) are both divisible by 7, so you can cancel out a 7: Divide 14 and 21 by 7. This changes the equation to a much simpler math problem.
