What Are the Article Options in Joomla?

The items in the Article Options pane in Joomla vary a little bit, depending on the type of layout assigned to the article: Single Article, Category Blog, Category List, and so on. Here are the options you’re likely to see in Joomla:

  • Show Title: This option lets you show or hide article titles.

  • Linked Titles: This option determines whether the title will act as a link to the article it represents.

  • Show Intro Text: This option lets you show or hide introductory text for each article.

  • Show Category: This option lets you show or hide the category title.

  • Link Category: This option determines whether the category name is a link to the category.

  • Show Parent: If this option is set to Show, the title of the article’s parent category will show.

  • Link Parent: If this option is set to Yes (and the Show parent option is set to Yes as well), the parent category’s title links to the parent category.

  • Show Author: This option lets you show or hide the author name.

  • Link Author: If this option is set to Yes (and the Show Author option is set to Yes as well), the author name is a link to the author’s user profile.

  • Show Create Date: This option lets you show or hide the article’s creation date and time.

  • Show Modify Date: This option lets you show or hide the date and time of the last modification.

  • Show Publish Date: This option lets you show or hide the date and time when the item was published.

  • Show Navigation: If set to Yes, this option will show site navigation links (Next, Previous, take a left at Albuquerque, etc.) to help readers move between articles in the category.

  • Show Read More”: This option lets you show or hide a Read More link for each article.

  • Show Icons: This option lets you show print and e-mail links as icons or text.

  • Show Print Icon: This option lets you show or hide the Print icon.

  • Show Email Icon: This option lets you show or hide the Email icon.

  • Show Hits: This option lets you show or hide the number of hits for the an article in the category. No matter whether you decide to show or hide the number of hits a given article receives, it’s worth mentioning that Joomla will track them for you anyway.

While being able to tweak each and every nuance of how an article is displayed on your page is a great feature, having to do it each and every time you post new content to your site would be a little bit taxing.

Fortunately, with Joomla, you can select to use an article’s Use Global setting, which will set the article to be displayed in the same manner as the rest of your site. If on the other hand, you want an article to have a specialized set of display characteristics, you may choose to use Use Article Settings.
