Using the Banners Tab in Joomla Banner Manager
The Banners tab is the default tab that Joomla users are greeted with when they first access the Banner Manager. The Banners tab allows you to see all of the banners that have been added to your site.
You can see if the banners are published, if they are sticky (meaning that the banner has been given priority for being displayed over other banner content), what client they are for, what category they belong to, the order (if it is used), the number of impressions the ad has seen as will as the number of clicks, plus any meta keywords you have set up, the purchase type, and language.
If you installed the sample data offered to you by Joomla during the CMS’s installation process, you will have three preinstalled banners that already reside in the Banners tab: Shop 1, Shop 2, and Support Joomla.
To take a closer look at the settings that work behind the scenes to make a banner advertisement work on Joomla, click the Shop 1 link. By doing so, you open the Shop 1 banner’s Edit Banner page.
The information entered in the Edit Banner page for the Shop 1 banner is the minimum amount of data required by Joomla should you wish to add any new banners to your website.
Should you want to add a new banner to your site, you can do so by clicking the New button on the Banner Manager: Banners page. Alternately, you can click Save & New from any Banner Manager: Edit Banner page. In either case, a page named Banner Manager: New Banner opens. This page contains all of the same fields and options found on a Banner Manager: Edit Banner page.
Under the New Banner pane, those options are:
Name: The name assigned to the banner (filling in this field is mandatory).
Category: The category that the banner will be filed under (assigning a category is mandatory).
Type: These radio buttons allow you to set the banner to use an image (loaded from Media Manager) or Custom HTML.
Width: Sets the banner’s width.
Height: Sets the banner’s height.
Alternative Text: This field can be used to enter text that appears in lieu of images or custom HTML if they have been disabled in a viewer’s browser.
Click URL: This field is used to enter the URL that is opened after a site visitor clicks on a banner advertisement.
Description: This field can be used to enter a brief description of the banner advertisement.
Language: The language used by the Banner Advertisement.
Each banner added to your site must be given a name and be added to a category. You also have the option of choosing what image the banner displays.
Under the Publishing Options pane, you can set start/end publishing dates for the banner advertisement. This can be a useful feature should your site have a banner ad that you only wish to be viewable for a specific period of time.
You can also set whether the banner is sticky, whether the banners will be displayed in sequence or at random, and even decide upon whether you want to track the number of views each banner receives by your site’s visitors, as well as the number of times the banner is clicked.
Sticky is a term used by Joomla to describe a piece of content — in this case, a banner advertisement — that is given priority to display. For example, if you have 12 banner ads in one category and 2 of them are sticky, and you can display 4 ads from that category in a position on your website, then the 2 sticky ads will always appear and the other2 spaces will be randomly filled.
