Turning Windows Firewall On or Off and Changing Notification Settings

5 of 10 in Series: The Essentials of Home Network Security

Like many Windows settings and features, Windows Firewall notifies you when certain events occur. For example, if a program is blocked, a pop-up window will alert you. For some people, this is fine. Others may find the notifications annoying and thus choose to disable the notification settings in Windows Firewall. To do so, follow these steps:

Open the Windows Control Panel, and then click System and Security.

The System and Security window appears.

Click Windows Firewall.

The Windows Firewall window appears.

In the left pane, click Change Notification Settings or Turn Windows Firewall On or Off.

The Customize Settings windows appears. From this screen, you can turn the Windows Firewall on or off, block all incoming connections (which overrides your allowed programs list), and turn off notifications when the Firewall blocks a program.

Make your selections and click OK.

Windows 7 saves your changes and closes the window.
