Translate Geometric Objects with the TI-84 Plus

When you translate a geometric object, you move it in a given direction for a given distance. A vector is used to tell GeoMaster in the TI-84 Plus graphing calculator the direction in which to move the object. The length of the vector tells GeoMaster how far to move the object.

To translate an already constructed geometric object, follow these steps:

  1. Press [GRAPH][WINDOW][9] to select the Vector tool from the DRAW menu and use it to construct the vector that defines the translation.

The first image shows the vector by which the already constructed triangle is to be translated.

  2. Press [GRAPH][TRACE][1] to select the Translation tool from the TRFM menu.

  3. Use the arrow keys to move the cursor to the object you want to translate and press [ENTER].

GeoMaster can translate only one object at a time. The object to be translated appears as a dashed figure. This is illustrated in the second image, where the triangle is the object that will be translated.

  4. Use the arrow keys to move the cursor to the vector and press [ENTER].

The translation of the original object appears along with the original object.

The Translation tool remains active until you deactivate it. So if you want to translate another object by the same vector, repeat Steps 3 and 4. When you are finished using the tool, deactivate it by pressing ë or by selecting another menu item.

After translating objects, if you move the vector, the translated objects will move to the location defined by the new vector. If you delete the vector, the translated object is also deleted.
