Tips for Taking Digital Photos in Stormy Weather

If you’re in a beautiful place with stormy weather, you can still take photos with your digital camera. Storms can give you beautiful shots. As long as the stormy conditions aren’t dangerous, you can get some great photos in bad weather. Just consider these guidelines:

1

Protect your camera.

Your camera has sensitive electronic circuits that can be damaged if the camera gets wet. Unless you own one of the new waterproof cameras, you should protect your camera (for example, with a Ziploc plastic bag). Just cut a hole in the bag for the lens and secure the bag to the lens with a rubber band. You can also cut holes for the camera straps and tape the bag to the camera straps.

2

Get closer to your subject.

Take close-up shots of flowers and other natural objects when they’re wet. The colors will be more saturated.

3

Photograph a thunderstorm from a distance.

Bolts of lightning popping out of the bottom of a cloud make interesting photos. When you take digital photos of a thunderstorm, take a long exposure, putting your camera on a tripod. If you really get into photographing lightning, you can purchase the Lightning Trigger, a device that opens the camera shutter when it senses lightning.

4

Photograph your city or town at night after a rainstorm.

While the roads are still slick with moisture, you can get some wonderful reflections from the streetlights and neon signs.

5

Leave the sky out of the composition on a bleak, overcast day.

The sky will be a monochrome gray, but the colors of other objects will be saturated.

6

Take photographs when a distant thunderstorm is clearing.

When the sun starts peeking through the clouds, you can get dramatic photos.
