Even though Thanksgiving conjures up images of pilgrims and Indians, you can choose inexpensive natural items that stray from this traditional decorating theme. For inspiration try spending a day outdoors enjoying the crisp weather and fall colors. Gather dried weeds, berries, and autumn leaves for your Thanksgiving decorating needs.

Carry a camera, a backpack and resealable bags to make your nature walks successful decorating outings:

Don’t touch or pick up any items unless you’re absolutely sure what they are. You don’t want to pluck poison ivy or carry home anything that may be harmful to you or your family. In addition, find out the rules and regulations regarding gathering items from your nature walk areas.

The following items make great Thanksgiving decorations:

  • Pine cones

  • Autumn leaves

  • Dried grasses and weeds

Farmers markets are also great places to places to pick up inexpensive pumpkins and gourds to display, as well as delectable edibles to lay out for your Thanksgiving feast.

  • Roses

  • Sheaves of wheat

  • Chili ristras (bunched and tied chilis)

  • Fruit: pomegranates, cranberries, grapes, blackberries, kumquats, apples pears

  • Vegetables: corn, rhubarb, sweet potatoes, beets, squashes
