Ten Ways to Get Help on Joomla

Joomla can be a pretty complex beast. Luckily, many resources are available to assist you in building and maintaining your Joomla site. Take a look at these sites and online documents. Reviewing them is a great way to get acquainted with the large and welcoming Joomla community.

  • Joomla Help Site: The official Joomla help site is a searchable site providing help on most Joomla topics, providing a user forum, installation requirements an installation and migration guides and glossary.

  • Joomla Official Documentation Wiki: This wiki site, which is constantly being updated with new information, is the official Joomla documentation site. The site is searchable and a great resource. If you’re a beginner, check the Absolute Beginners Guide to Joomla.

For more advanced users, the site offers links to information pertaining to three different user groups: administration, web designers, and developers. By using these links as a starting point, you have a much easier time when trying to navigate to the help topic or tip that you’re looking for.

  • Joomla Forums: If you need an answer that you can’t find on the Joomla help site, you can ask your question at the Joomla forums. The forums are full of other Joomla users with any number of levels of expertise. Some users come to the forum looking for help, others do so to offer it.

That’s one of the best things about Joomla — the sense of community you enjoy when you interact with other Joomla users. Before you can ask or answer any questions, however, you need to sign up as a member of the forum. After this is done, you can peruse any number of forums topics such as extensions, site security, and installation.

If you don’t run across the topic you were looking for, you can even start your own topic to address the problem you’ve been having. In no time at all, you may well have more answers to the issue than you could ever have imagined.

  • Joomla Community Portal: The Joomla Community Portal gives Joomla people — especially developers — a place to congregate. Here, you can find lists of Joomla events, find out how to contribute to Joomla, and more.

You can read the Joomla Community Magazine on this site and check JoomlaConnect, which collects Joomla news from around the world. In addition, you can find blogs by members of the Joomla team that tell you where Joomla is headed.

  • Joomla User Groups: Dozens of Joomla user groups operate worldwide. To find a group near you, check this site, which provides links to user groups everywhere.

  • Joomla Translation Teams: Joomla is installed by users around the world — and in many languages. This site provides links to the various teams around the world that are responsible for versions of Joomla ranging from Catalan to Turkish, as well as a multitude of downloadable language packs to help you localize your Joomla installation.

  • Joomla Quick Start Guides: No matter what version of Joomla you end up using, you can find a nice quick-start guide for Joomla at this URL. Traditionally, the Quick Start Guides have been great resources for beginners. They include material on installation (including installation with XAMPP), and discuss topics such as menus, templates, and modules.

  • Joomla Quick Start Videos: Like the quick start guides, the videos are very popular, especially with new users. If you are more of a “see and do” learner, rather than a “read and do” learner, the videos are for you.

  • Joomla Tutorials: Joomla Tutorials is a great site for tips, tricks, and information on the installation and maintenance of Joomla. Founded by Joomla co-founder Brad Baker, the website has a wealth of informative video content that will have you overcoming any hurdles you may encounter in no time.

  • Joomla Beginners: Another official Joomla documentation wiki, Joomla Beginners, is a documentation site geared towards, well, Joomla beginners. The Joomla Beginner’s site is destined to become an important resource for the Joomla community.
