Ten Top Upgrades for Your Existing PC

If you'd rather boost the performance or capabilities of your existing PC than spend the contents of your wallet or purse on a new computer, here are ten suggestions for upgrading a PC with the latest hardware and the best possible speed:

  • Install additional memory.

  • Add an external hard drive for backups and archival storage.

  • Install a USB 3.0 adapter card.

  • Swap your existing DVD drive for a Blu-Ray drive.

  • Install a new graphics adapter.

  • Install a new motherboard/CPU combo. (Make sure your existing memory will work with the new motherboard.)

  • Add a second internal hard drive (or replace the existing hard drive with a new drive that has at least twice the capacity).

  • Update a PC running Windows XP or Vista to Windows 7 or Windows 8.

  • Add a USB 2.0 or 3.0 flash drive dedicated to ReadyBoost.

  • Install a Bluetooth adapter (either internal or using a USB port).
