Six Tips for iPod Mastery

Part of the iPod & iTunes For Dummies Cheat Sheet

Make sure that using your iPod remains just this side of divine by mastering the following tricks and techniques for the iPod classic, iPod nano, iPod touch, and iPod Shuffle:

  • Reset an iPod: Toggle the iPod classic hold switch on and off, and then press the Menu and select buttons simultaneously for six seconds. For the iPod nano, press the sleep/wake button and the home button for six seconds. For the iPod touch, press the sleep/wake button and home button for fifteen seconds. For the iPod shuffle, slide the three-way position switch to the Off position.

  • Increase or decrease the volume on an iPod classic: Scroll the click wheel clockwise to increase the volume or counterclockwise to decrease it (while the song is playing).

  • Pause audio playback in an iPod classic or iPod nano: Disconnect your headphones or EarPods, or press the play/pause button on an iPod classic, or tap the play/pause button on an iPod nano.

  • Turn off an iPod classic: Press and hold the play/pause button. To turn it on, press any button (as long as the hold switch is set off-hold).

  • Play songs in an iPod randomly: On an iPod shuffle, slide the three-position switch to the crossing arrows icon. On an iPod touch or iPod nano, if you turn on Shake to Shuffle in Settings→Music, you can shake the iPod to shuffle songs. On an iPod classic, choose Shuffle Songs from the main menu.

  • Play songs in an iPod shuffle sequentially: Slide the three-position switch to the arrows-in-a-loop icon.
