Share Lashings of Mindfulness with Children's Books

Practising mindfulness is not something you want to keep to yourself. If you have discovered new insights, why not share that experience with the children in your life? Here are a few mindful book choices that children throughout the United Kingdom and the world have enjoyed for years:

  • Aesop's Fables by Aesop (Wordsworth Children’s Classics). Generations of children have read this collection of stories. Aesop’s fables are filled with metaphors and morals – they show that by being more mindful and thoughtful, you can benefit the world around you.

  • The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle (Puffin). This classic book is all about how a caterpillar turns into a beautiful butterfly. The simple story shows how things change and transform. And of course, this seemingly miraculous transformation is real – children learn that change is possible, even in difficult circumstances. Mindfulness involves stepping back and seeing the possibility of change.

  • The House at Pooh Corner by A.A. Milne (Egmont). Many of the characters’ actions and conversations are mindful in this story. Winnie-the-Pooh often refers to living in the present moment, letting go of complexity and valuing friendship.

  • Pollyanna by Eleanor Porter (Wordsworth Children’s Classics). The name ‘Pollyanna’ is often applied to people who see circumstances in an excessively positive light. But, in this book, children discover that situations themselves aren’t inherently bad or good; by changing the way you see them, you feel and act more effectively.

Although mindfulness isn’t about positive thinking, mindful awareness is about recognising the impact of seeing situations from a different perspective — and this book does just that.
