Sell Banner and Text Advertising on Your Mom Blog

Selling banner and text ads may be the most common ways to sell advertising on your blog, but they’re not the only ways. Banners and text links are only a part of what you can offer to sponsors. The smaller you are as a blogger, the more creative you can get with creating custom campaigns to really maximize everything you have to offer.

But even with highly specialized advertising packages, it’s very common to include banner and text advertising into your proposals. So here’s a list of the basic ways you can present banners and text advertising:

  • Banner ads: These are image-based ads displayed in your blog’s header and/or your sidebar. They can also be animated or video ads. They come in standard sizes. The most common sizes you’ll see on blogs are 300 x 250 pixels, called the Medium Rectangle; 728 x 90 pixels, called a Leaderboard; 160 x 600 pixels, called the Wide Skyscraper; or 125 x 125 pixels, called the Square Button.

    The Square Button is not a standard size for large advertisers anymore as of February 2011. But it’s commonly used among smaller advertisers, many of whom work with bloggers.

  • Text-link ads: When an advertiser pays you to link to its website in a blog post or in your sidebar, that is considered a text link. Google’s AdSense ads are also considered text ads. This form of advertising is a little controversial because text links can sometimes affect the search engine rankings of those you link to.

  • Sponsored posts: A blog post written at the request of an advertiser, also called an advertorial. It could be a review, a giveaway, an informational piece, or what would be considered a product placement post. An example: Tabasco paid bloggers to create a recipe that included Tabasco sauce and post it to their blogs.

    The FTC regulates how some sponsored posts appear on blogs and often requires a specifically formatted disclosure.
