Putting the Essay Route Map Technique to Use

Do you find it difficult writing essays? With the right preparation, essay writing can be so much easier. The essay route map technique helps you plan and write essays for assignments and exams. It helps you organize an essay in sequence, paragraph by paragraph, from introduction through to conclusion.

The following steps give a brief understanding of how to create an essay route map.

  1. Get a good idea of what the exam essay question is likely to be. Your exam essay question will determine how many sections your route map will need. Having some idea of the exam essay question will allow you to prepare a broad draft essay using a body of information that can be adapted to suit any related exam question.

  2. Draw your essay route map with a line down the center of the page and numbered sections placed right and left from the top down.

  3. Begin to plan your essay by deciding on what information will go in each section and sub-section of your route map. As you go through your readings and articles finding ideas and quotes, make location notes in your route map to remind you of where to find that information again when it comes time to write your essay. At the same time cross-reference your location notes by tagging the reading or article with the route map’s section and/or sub-section number.

  4. Write your draft essay. Use your route map as a guide and work through your readings in sequence. Extract the ideas and write them in your own words. Use a few direct quotes, too.

  5. Identify in each paragraph the keywords or phrases that summarize the main point of that paragraph. The idea is that if you could memorize this one word, it would be enough of a trigger for you to rewrite the entire paragraph in the exam.

  6. Use the Story Method memory technique. With a list of keywords extracted in sequence from your draft essay, you can use Story Method to memorize them easily.
