Photo Editing Images in Photoshop Elements 11

Part of the Photoshop Elements 11 All-in-One For Dummies Cheat Sheet

If you’re not happy with your photos, you’re in luck: You can easily correct and repair your images in Photoshop Elements 11. The following steps offer a logical workflow to fix any image issues:

  1. Crop, straighten, and resize your images, if necessary.

You can use the Crop tool, Straighten tool, and the Image→Resize commands.

  2. When you have the images in their proper physical state, correct the lighting and establish good tonal range for your shadows, highlights, and midtones in order to display the greatest detail possible.

The Levels command under the Enhance→Adjust Lighting submenu is a good place to start. Correcting your tonal range will often correct minor color problems. If not, move on to adjusting the color balance.

  3. Adjust color by eliminating any colorcasts and adjusting the saturation, if necessary, by using the commands under the Enhance→Adjust Color submenu.

  4. Retouch any flaws using the retouching tools, such as Healing Brush, Spot Healing Brush and Clone Stamp tools.

  5. Apply any desired enhancements or special effects, such as Photo Effects, Layer Styles, and Filters.

  6. Finally, use the Unsharp Mask or Adjust Sharpness commands, under the Enhance menu, to sharpen your image if you feel that it could use a boost in clarity and sharpness, as shown in the following figure.
