Password Protect Your BlackBerry PlayBook

To secure your BlackBerry PlayBook, you need to set a password for access to your PlayBook. Choose a password that’s easy to remember but difficult to guess. And please don’t write it down on a sticky note and attach it to the back of the tablet!

To add the requirement for a password, follow these steps:

  1. Tap the gear icon in the upper-right corner of the home screen.

  2. Tap the Security tab on the left side of the screen.

  3. Tap Password.

  4. Move the slider for Enable Password to On.

  5. Enter a password, and then confirm it by entering it a second time.

  6. Choose a Lock After time.

To be safest, choose one or two minutes. That way someone will have to type the password anytime after the BlackBerry PlayBook hasn’t been actively used for that period of time.

Change the password for your BlackBerry PlayBook

If you’re concerned that someone has your secret code, change the password. Some users do this every few months just as a matter of course.

To change the code, follow along:

  1. Swipe down from the top bezel.

  2. Tap the gear icon in the upper-right corner of the home screen.

  3. Tap the Security tab (on the left side).

  4. On the Password page, tap Change Password.

  5. Enter the existing password.

  6. Type the new password, followed by a confirmation.

Set a password for your BlackBerry smartphone

Setting a password on your smartphone keeps unauthorized users from making phone calls or accessing your calendar, contacts, notes, and other apps. If you do set a password on your BlackBerry smartphone, you’ll have to enter it every time you want to access information from the phone using the BlackBerry Bridge application from the tablet. That’s annoying, but safe.

One trick in choosing passwords is to use a phone number that you can remember, but one that isn’t directly associated with you (for example, the number for a distant relative who has a different last name, or the pizza joint you order from regularly). You can also split up a number familiar to you and place an unrelated, obscure word in the middle: 276beachplum0825 is a pretty good code.
