Order of Operations, or Order of Precedence, for Math and Algebra Expressions

When mathematical or algebraic expressions get complex, use the order of operations (also called order of precedence) to simplify them. Evaluate arithmetic from left to right according to the following order of precedence:

  1. Parentheses

  2. Exponents

  3. Multiplication and division

  4. Addition and subtraction
