Open and Close a Document

You open a document, or file, to make changes to or print the document. When you are finished with your work, you close the document. Follow these steps to open and close a document:

Click the word File on any program’s menu bar, that row of words along the program’s top.

No menu bar? Press Alt to reveal it.

When the File menu drops down, click Open.

Windows shows you the Open window, usually with several documents available.

Point at your desired document, and double-click it to open it.

The program opens the file and displays it on the screen.

When you are finished working with the file, click the red X in the upper-right corner.

This closes the file.
