Numbering Headings in Word 2007 Multilevel Lists

If you want to add numbers to the headings in a Word 2007 document, you do so by changing the heading styles to a multilevel list.

1

Locate the Multilevel List button on the Ribbon.

2

Click the Multilevel List button.

3

Click Define New Multilevel List to create a list, but leave the Define New Multilevel List dialog box open.

The Define New Multilevel List dialog box abounds with options. Click More to see all options.

4

Select a level for your list, and then select the heading style you want to associate with it from the Link Level to Style drop-down list.

You can associate the level with any style; heading styles are most commonly used.

5

Repeat the first two steps for each level in your list.

You don’t have to assign Heading 1 to level 1 and Heading 2 to level 2 and so on, but it sure makes the most sense.

6

Adjust any other settings you’d like to work with.

Most of these aren’t that difficult; they’re simply not needed most of the time.

7

Click OK.

The multilevel list now appears in your List Library, and the heading styles in your document have now been updated to use that numbering pattern.

As you apply heading styles, Word automatically applies the number formatting. Heading numbering always applies to all the paragraphs in a document formatted with a given heading style; you can’t apply it selectively to some heading paragraphs but not others. You can, however, change an existing list to use this formatting by selecting the new list from your List Library.

It's not as easy as you describe. You should let people know how to go from 1 to 1.1 to 1.1.1, etc., because it's not intuitively obvious in Word 2007.

I am having trouble adding a header (upper left) with a page number in the upper right corner. This must be done on pages 2-7. On the first page, I need the header on the left then the page number on the bottom (centered). this is an APA style I'm shooting for. I seem to be able to do one or the other, but when I try to add my page number to the upper right, the header disappears.... Any suggestions?

Cathy - my suggestion is that you'd get an Open Office (that's free of charge)
