NOOK eReader Storage Capacity

The NOOK Simple Touch comes with 2GB of internal memory, and the NOOK Color includes a whopping 8GB, with some of that memory reserved for Barnes & Noble content. Considering that a typical book is less than 1 megabyte (1MB), and that a gigabyte is 1,024 megabytes, you can figure on being able to carry around something close 1,000 (mostly text) books on a NOOK Simple Touch or 5,000 books on a NOOK Color before running out of internal memory.

When you move past books and into video, audio, and pictures, you probably will run out of space in the internal memory. That’s where the microSD card comes in.

A microSD expansion card is only is 0.6 inches long by 0.4 inches wide and a mere .04 inches thick, but it can hold up to 32GB; that is a lot of space. It can hold approximately 32,000 average-sized books, or millions of pages of documents from your personal computer, plus the ones stored in the internal memory. That should be just about enough reading material for a week’s vacation by the shore. Or a roundtrip spaceflight to Mars.

Books with lots of illustrations (including children’s books, cookbooks, travel books, and art books) require much more storage space. It is also worth noting that some graphics-rich magazines and books can be as large as 1GB all by themselves. So, too, will any downloaded audio or video files.
