Mastering the Months in Spanish

When you look at the Spanish words for the months of the year (los meses del año; lohs mehs-es dehl ahn-yoh), you may think that they look pretty familiar. The Spanish spellings for the months are similar to the English spellings; in most cases, it’s the vowels that change.

Los meses del año.
Los meses del año.
  • enero (eh-neh-roh) (January)

  • febrero (feh-bvreh-roh) (February)

  • marzo (mahr-soh) (March)

  • abril (ah-bvreel) (April)

  • mayo (mah-yoh) (May)

  • junio (Hoo-neeoh) (June)

  • julio (Hoo-leeoh) (July)

  • agosto (ah-gohs-toh) (August)

  • septiembre (sehp-teeehm-breh) (September)

  • octubre (ohk-too-bvreh) (October)

  • noviembre (noh-bveeehm-breh) (November)

  • diciembre (dee-seeehm-breh) (December)

In Spanish, the names of the months do not begin with a capital letter, as they do in English.

Take a look at the following examples to help you practice using months:

  • En enero voy a ir a Colombia. (ehn eh-neh-roh bvoy ah eer a koh-lohm-bveeah) (In January, I’m going to go to Colombia.)

  • Vuelvo de España en marzo. (bvoo-ehl-bvoh de ehs-pah-nyah ehn mahr-soh) (I return from Spain in March.)

  • El viaje es de julio a diciembre. (ehl bveeah-Heh ehs deh Hoo-leeoh ah dee-seeehm-bvreh) (The trip is from July to December.)

  • La estación de lluvias es de mayo a noviembre. (lah ehs-tah-seeohn deh yoo-bveeahs ehs deh mah-yoh ah noh-bveeehm-bvreh) (The rainy season is from May to November.)
