Managing your Home’s Temperature

Sure you want to be comfortable, but you also want to live green, and moving the thermostat a few degrees lessens your carbon footprint while still keeping you comfortable. Check with the U.S. Department of Energy for more tips on using less energy and keeping the bills down.

Whether it’s spring, summer, fall, or winter, these energy-saving tips work all year long:

1

Add weather-stripping to doors and windows.

Keep cold air out or in, depending on the season.

2

Tuck insulating foam inserts behind switch plates and face plates.

Electrical outlets on exterior walls let in air no matter how well insulated your home is, so grab some outlet insulators at your local hardware store.

3

Install retractable awnings.

The awnings shade windows in summer but let you take advantage of the sun’s warmth in winter.

4

Plant trees.

Deciduous trees that lose their leaves in winter shade the house in summer and let sunlight through in winter.

5

Control the amount of heating or cooling going into unused rooms.

Close forced-air registers in rooms you don’t use in wintertime, though take care not to keep it so cold that things freeze.

6

Reduce the use of kitchen and bathroom ventilating fans.

You don’t want to send too much heated or cooled air out of the house.
