Managing the Drupal Comments Module

The commenting system used by the Drupal Forum module — and by all the other content types — is contained in a separate module, the Comment module. By default, authenticated users can comment on any content on your site that allows comments.

Every time you create content, be it a basic page, article, blog entry, or forum post, you can select whether to allow comments. The option is located on each content creation page in a section called Comment settings. There you can decide if no comments are allowed, new comments are allowed, or existing comments can be read, but no new ones added.

    Moderating comments

Sometimes you might prefer to moderate comments. This means that the comments people make aren't immediately published; instead, they’re kept in a list for you to approve and then publish or delete. To turn on comment moderation, follow these steps:

  1. From the Dashboard menu bar, choose People and click the Permissions tab.

  2. Under the Comment section of the Permissions list (located near the top of the list), deselect the Skip Comment Approval check box under Authenticated User (or any other user group whose comments you want to approve before they appear on the site).

  3. Click the Save Permissions button.

Now each time anyone from a targeted user group posts a comment, she will see this message: Your comment has been queued for moderation by site administrators and will be published after approval.

Approving or deleting comments

This comment will not be published until you approve it. To go through the list of comments waiting for you to moderate, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Find Content from the Dashboard menu bar, and then click the Comments tab.

    The Comments overlay opens.

  2. Hover your cursor over the Subject line.

The text of the comment appears. Alternatively, you can click the comment link to view the comment.

  3. Click your browser's Back button to return to the Approval queue.

  4. If you approve a comment, select the check box next to it.

  5. From the Update Options drop-down list, select Publish the Selected Comments.

  6. Click the Update button.

You can select multiple comments and delete them by selecting the check boxes for the comments you want to delete, selecting Delete the Selected Comments from the Update Options drop-down list, and then clicking the Update button.
