Make Your Mouse Left-handed

If you’re one of the 10 percent of humanity who prefers using your left hand, there’s hope: Manufacturers make left-handed computer mice. You can also direct Windows to reverse the role of the main mouse buttons so that left and right buttons are swapped to match your southernmost paw. Follow these steps, using either hand:

  1. Open the Control Panel and activate the Mouse Properties dialog box.

    • In Windows 7 and Windows Vista, choose Hardware and Sound, and then choose Mouse. In Window 7, the Mouse link is found beneath the Devices and Printer heading. In Windows Vista, choose the Mouse heading.

    • In Windows XP, click on the Mouse icon.

The Mouse Properties dialog box is displayed.

  2. Click the Buttons tab (if necessary).

  3. Put a check mark by the option Switch Primary and Secondary Buttons.

  4. Click OK.

You can now use your left index finger to click the mouse’s right button and get all that good left-click action.

All the manuals, web pages, computer books, and other documentation on planet Earth assume that the main mouse button is the left button. When you switch buttons, the main mouse button is the right one. Also, when the directions say to right-click, you’re doing a left-click. Remember that!
