Mac OS X Mountain Lion Server For Dummies

Important Mountain Lion Server Information to Save
Numbers and names help identify your server to the rest of the world. Keeping track of them can help if something goes wrong or if someone needs to take your place. Record the following Mac OS X Mountain Lion Server information and put it in a safe place:
ID numbers of the Mac hardware: You can find the MAC address (also called Ethernet ID) and the serial number in the System Information utility in /Applications/Utilities.
Administrator Account: Your short username and password that you use during installation. (If you've upgraded from Lion, the administrator account is already established.)
Internet addresses: Your router's IP address, the IP range of your subnet, and the subnet mask. If your server is connecting directly to your Internet service provider, you may have a PPPoE account and password to record.
Static IP address of your server: Record for each Ethernet port.
Host name of your server: The server in server.example.com or server.example.private.

Methods of Logging In Remotely to Mountain Lion Server
You can log in to and manage Mountain Lion Server from another computer, including from Windows and Linux computers, in several ways. With all these methods, you do not need to install anything on OS X Server:
Secure Shell (SSH) command-line connection from any computer
The Server app from another Mac running OS X 10.8
Workgroup Manager from another Mac running OS X 10.8
Remote control with VNC-compatible software from any computer.
Remote control with Apple Remote Desktop from a Mac on the network.
Mountain Lion Server Keyboard Tips for Windows Users
Mac users may be familiar with the keyboard and mouse actions used to administer Mountain Lion Server, but these techniques may be new to Windows users:
To right-click using a one-button mouse, hold down the Control key while clicking. To right-click with a two-button mouse, use the right button. If you are using a Mac notebook or an Apple Trackpad, click the trackpad with two fingers to right-click.
Windows users know that to make multiple selections in a list, they click the first item in the range to select it and then shift-click the last item in the range. All the items in between will be selected. What Windows users may not know is that they can Command-click to add items, in any order, to those they have already selected. They can also Command-click on selected items to deselect them.
The Mac Option key is also labeled Alt but isn’t always equivalent to the PC Alt. And the Mac Control key isn’t always the same as the Windows Ctrl key. For example, to copy a file, hold down the Option key when you drag and drop the file. (In Windows, you Ctrl-drag).
System Preferences is the rough equivalent of the Windows Control Panel. It holds settings (such as IP addresses) for the individual machine hosting the server.
