Location-based Marketing to the Beer Enthusiast

Untappd is a niche location-based services that focuses on beer enthusiasts. Beer services allow you to see what people are drinking and where they’re enjoying those beers.

Untappd is integrated with foursquare, so when you check in to the beer you’re drinking, you can also optionally check in to the place where you’re drinking it. And there’s just one check-in for the location and the beer, not two separate ones.

The app does all of the standard things, like pushing your check-ins to Facebook and Twitter. The potential to use this as a beer-finding tool is immense, particularly for craft beer, which isn’t as widely distributed as the big brews due to limited quantity. There is potential for pubs to be able to push messages to their best customers when the beers on tap change.

If you own a brewery and distributor, you can use this information to determine which beers are popular. You can also work with Untappd to create special badges that users can unlock when they drink a beer or brand of beer a certain number of times. Some beer brands have used the badges feature to award users with a badge for checking in to their beers.
