Common Joomla! Tasks

Understanding how to navigate through Joomla 1.6 makes building a great-looking interactive Web site easier. Keep viewers’ interest piqued by using the following tips when you design Web sites with Joomla!:

  • To navigate to the Administration Control Panel:

    • If Joomla is installed locally (on your own computer), navigate to http://yoursite/administrator (that’s http://localhost/administrator or http://localhost/xxxx/administrator if you installed Joomla in the directory xxxx).

    • If Joomla is installed remotely (on a host server), navigate to www.yoursite.com/administrator.

  • To get a preview of the front end while logged into the back end: Click the View Site link in the top-right corner of any back end page.

  • To take your site offline: From any back end page, Choose Site→Global Configuration to open the Global Configuration page. From the Site Settings pane, select the Yes radio button in the row marked Site Offline.

  • To put your site back online: From any back end page, Choose Site→Global Configuration to open the Global Configuration page. From the Site Settings pane, select the No radio button in the row marked Site Offline.

  • To switch templates: From any back end page, Choose Extensions→Template Manager. Select the radio button for the template you want to use. Now, click the Make Default button.

How to Access Joomla! Managers in 1.6

In the course of building and maintaining a Web site with Joomla! 1.6, you may find yourself working with the various Managers on a regular basis. This quick reference guide illustrates a fast and easy way to open the Managers that you interact with in your Joomla site’s back end most often:

How to Create a New Article with Joomla! 1.6

Joomla! 1.6 makes it easy to create and publish your Web site’s content without the need for any complex code. To publish a new Publish article in Joomla! 1.6, just follow these easy steps:

  1. Navigate to your site’s back end Administrative Control Panel and click the Add New Article icon, or choose Content→Article Manager→Add New.

  2. Enter a title, select a category for your new article to be filed under, and write the contents of the article in the article-text window.

  3. Click Save to publish the new article or Save & Close to publish the new article and close Article Editor.

How to Create a New Menu Item with Joomla! 1.6

Don't stress if you need to create a menu item on your interactive Web page — it's easy when using Joomla! Menu Manager. To add menu items to an existing site, simply use these steps:

  1. Choose Menus→Menu Manager to open Menu Manager.

  2. Click the name of the menu that you want to add a new menu item to. The Menu Item Manager opens.

  3. Click the New button to open the Menu Manager: New Menu Item page.

  4. Select a Menu Item Type and enter a Menu Title.

  5. Select which menu you want the new menu item to appear in with the Menu Location drop-down list.

  6. Click Save to publish the menu item or Save & Close to publish the menu item and close the Menu Manager: New Menu Item page.

How to Install an Extension with Joomla! 1.6

Thanks to the constantly growing community of Joomla! users and developers, there are literally thousands of extensions that you can download and install to extend the functionality of your Joomla! site. With Joomla! 1.6, installing new extensions has never been easier:

  1. Locate and download an extension from one any trusted online source.

  2. Choose Extensions→Extensions Manager from any back end page. Extension Manager opens.

  3. In the Upload Package File section, click the Choose File button to browse to and select the extension you want to install to your Joomla! site.

  4. Click the Upload File & Install button.
