iPhone For Seniors For Dummies

It's not always obvious what settings are available to you to modify how your iPhone works. For example, you can use Settings to change how the Safari browser protects you from being tracked online or which online calendar's events are shown in iPhone's Calendar app. This Cheat Sheet gives you a quick rundown of some of the most commonly used settings so that you can find what you need to customize your iPhone's behavior.

What You Can Do with iPhone 6s General Settings

Use iPhone's General settings to set up basic functionality for your everyday use. You access the General settings described in the following table by tapping Settings on the Home screen and then tapping General.

Setting Description
About Get information about downloaded content, apps, memory, the iPhone serial number and model, your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth addresses, support information, and legal and regulatory jargon.
Software Update Use this setting to check for available updates to iOS via iCloud.
Siri Turn the Siri personal assistant feature on or off, turn the "Hey, Siri" hands-free mode on or off, set the language, voice gender, and Contacts card to be used, and choose whether Voice Feedback always on or on only when in hands-free mode.
Spotlight Search Access settings for what types of content the iPhone Spotlight Search feature returns in search results.
Handoff & Suggested Apps Activate the Handoff feature, which allows you to start an activity such as composing an email on one iOS device and picking up where you left off on another compatible iOS device or Mac.
Car Play If you have a car that supports the Car Play feature, use this setting to make a connection with it.
Accessibility Set features for using an iPhone for people with visual, hearing, or dexterity challenges.
Storage & iCloud Usage Check the items that are backed up to iCloud, manage local storage used by apps, and buy additional storage. Also turn on the display in the status bar for indicating the percentage of your battery power available and get battery usage information.
Background App Refresh Turning this on allows apps that you specify to refresh their content when you're accessing a Wi-Fi or cellular connection. Turning these off can save on battery life.
Auto-Lock Set the amount of time for inactivity at which iPhone automatically locks the screen.
Restrictions Set restrictions on Safari and iTunes, as well as restrict installation of applications and location services. Specify allowed content for music, podcasts, movies, TV shows, and apps.
Date & Time Choose 24-hour time and a time zone and set the correct date and time.
Keyboard Set keyboard correction features such as Auto-Capitalization and Check Spelling.
Language & Region Specify the language for onscreen information and keyboards. Choose a region format for date, time, currency, and phone numbers.
iTunes Wi-Fi Sync Sync wirelessly with a copy of iTunes on a nearby computer when connected to a Wi-Fi network.
VPN Configure and turn on and off virtual private networks (VPN).
Regulatory Here you find all the regulatory organization with which your iPhone is in compliance.
Reset Reset all settings or selected settings, such as network or keyboard, to factory defaults.

iPhone 6s Mail, Contacts, Calendars Settings

For the social and organizational parts of your brain, iPhone makes available Mail, Contacts, and Calendar apps. The settings for these apps are covered in the following table. You access the settings listed here by tapping Settings on the Home screen and then tapping Mail, Contacts, Calendars.

Setting Description
Add Account Add and manage email accounts.
Fetch New Data Turn on/off the feature that pushes new emails and contacts and calendar info for Microsoft Exchange and iCloud accounts to you automatically.
Mail section
Preview Set how many lines in email messages are to show in the Inbox preview.
Show To/Cc Label Turn display of the To/Cc label on or off in emails.
Swipe Options Set what swiping left or right should do, such as marking an item as read or flagging an item in Mail.
Flag Style Choose whether to use color or a flag shape to place flags on urgent emails.
Ask Before Deleting Turn on to display a confirmation dialog before deleting emails.
Load Remote Images Control whether images on websites that are referenced in emails are displayed in the emails; displaying such images can allow a site to gather some information about you and your iPhone.
Organize by Thread Turn on a feature to organize replies to email messages to and from anyone so that those messages appear together in a subfolder.
Always Bcc Myself Turn on to send a copy of every email to yourself. (This is in addition to saving a copy in the Sent folder.)
Mark Addresses Turn on to mark addresses that don't end with the common .com ending.
Increase Quote Level Add one level of indentation to text when you reply to a message.
Signature Change the signature at the end of all your messages. (Sent from my iPhone is the default message.) You can set separate signatures for each account.
Default Account Specify which account is to be used by apps when working with Mail.
Contacts section
Sort Order Specify the sort order for contacts (first/last or last/first names).
Display Order Specify the display order for contacts (first/last or last/first).
Show in App Switcher Turn this on to show recent calls and favorite callers when you press the Home button twice.
Short Name Choose to use Short Names (such as First Name Only) in emails to fit more names on a page.
My Info Access a list of contacts to choose one to base your info on.
Default Account Specify which account is to be used by apps when working with Contacts.
Import SIM Contacts Import contacts saved to your phone's SIM card to the Contacts app.
Calendars section
Time Zone Override Turn on time zone support to show event data and times in your time zone; set your time zone.
Alternate Calendars Choose a Chinese, Hebrew, or Islamic calendar.
Week Numbers Turn on to show week numbers out of the 52 weeks in the year next to each week in a calendar month.
Show Invitee Declines Indicate those whom you invited to a Calendar event who declined.
Sync Control how far back in time events are synced when you perform a sync with iTunes via a cable or Wi-Fi.
Default Alert Times Set up the default time increment for alerts (such as on the day, one day before, and so on) before a birthday, event, or all-day event.
Start Week On Choose which day of the week begins the week (in the United States, the default is Sunday, for example).
Default Calendar Choose whether to use the built-in Calendar program or a calendar from a synced program such as Gmail or AOL.

Customizing Browser Settings with Your iPhone 6s and Safari

Getting on the Internet with your iPhone is easy using its Wi-Fi or 3G/4G LTE capabilities. After you're online, the bundled browser, Safari, is your ticket to a wide world of information, entertainment, education, and more. You can customize and enhance your Safari experience by accessing and modifying the settings in the following table; simply tap Settings on the Home screen and then tap Safari.

Search Engine Choose among Google, DuckDuckGo, Bing, and Yahoo! search engines.
Search Engine Suggestions Turn on or off a feature that makes suggestions of possible matches when you perform a search within Safari.
Spotlight Suggestions Turn on or off a feature that makes suggestions of possible matches when you search using the Spotlight Search feature.
Quick Website Search Use this feature to search within a website by entering the website name in a search field along with the search criterion.
Preload Top Hit Turn on to have Safari load a list of top hits to display.
Passwords Add a password to access iPhone.
AutoFill Turn on AutoFill to automatically complete contact information, names, credit cards, and/or passwords as you type.
Frequently Visited Sites Turn off to stop viewing Apple’s suggested frequently visited sites at the end of your Favorites list.
Favorites Cause Safari to make Favorites available when you enter an address or search term, or open a new tab in Safari.
Open Links Control whether linked pages open in a new tab or in the background (on the current tab).
Show Tab Bar Turn on to display the Tab Bar in Safari.
Block Pop-Ups Turn this on to block (most) pop-up windows from displaying in the browser.
Do Not Track Request that sites refrain from tracking your actions online.
Block Cookies Specify whether to accept cookies only from sites you've visited, only from the current site, never, or always.
Fraudulent Website Warning Turn on the feature to warn you when you go to suspicious websites.
Clear History and Website Data Tap to clear the history of websites you've visited in the browser.
Use Cellular Data Turn on to allow your cellular network to save items on the Reading List to the phone so that you can read them offline.
Advanced Review data stored on your device by individual websites, enable or disable JavaScript, and allow Web Inspector on your Safari browser to display information to help you resolve errors when displaying web pages.
