iPad Educational Apps for Math and Science Classrooms

iPad math and science educational apps such as Video Physics, Reflection, AirMicroPad, TimeLapse Pro, Star Walk, and SPARKvue HD stress classroom investigation, experimentation, and real-world application of scientific and mathematical principles. That isn't to say that there other excellent iPad math and science apps that also provide important instruction, simulated experiences, opportunities for differentiated learning, and excellent game-based approaches to the learning of important principles.

The list of apps good math and science iPad apps changes rapidly; you can refer to the updated recommended apps on Sam Gliksman on Listly or at iPads in Education. Here are a few to start with.

Frog Dissection iPad science iPad app

The ethics of animal dissection have been debated for quite some time. Calling itself the "greener alternative for teaching dissection in the classroom," the Frog Dissection app is geared toward middle-school students who are learning about organs and organ systems as part of their life-science curriculum.

Rather than dissect an actual animal, students dissect a virtual specimen with all the trappings that come with the real procedure. The app comes with all the dissection tools and detailed instructions to complete the procedure.

Once dissection is complete, the frog's organs are exposed for further study. With the aid of vivid 3D imagery, students are able to visualize the internal organs very effectively.

The Frog Dissection app is an excellent example of the educational promise offered by a rising tide of vivid, realistic simulations offering students experiences that may otherwise be unattainable.

DragonBox iPad math iPad app

DragonBox uses a game-based approach that has students solve puzzles by moving cards around onscreen. The principles required to solve the puzzles are based on . . . (keep this to yourself) fundamental algebraic concepts! Yes, you learn the principles of algebra by playing a fun game. That does seem to break all the rules, now, doesn't it?

Khan Academy math and science iPad app

If you've been on a remote safari in the Panamanian jungle for the last few years and haven't heard of Khan Academy, it contains more than 3,000 tutorial videos on a wide variety of topics in math and science.

Granted, it isn't always Oscar-winning material, but when it's late at night and you really need help understanding Negative Exponent Intuition, you can just open the Khan Academy app and watch the video.

The nifty subtitles feature enables you to tap any line of dialogue listed and jump right to that point in the video. It isn't quite as effective without the interactive exercises that are available after each video on the Khan Academy website, but apparently, they should also be available in the iPad app soon.

Monster Physics science iPad app

With Monster Physics, you can build your own virtual machines, from cars to rocket ships, using parts including wheels, wings, propellers, magnets, rockets, and claws. Kids learn physics by building and refining their inventions and completing missions.

Build virtual machines by combining different wheels, rockets, propellers, cannons, magnets, claws, wings, and more. Monster Physics renders your creation, and then you can actually operate it in real time. Drive your car, pilot your rocket into space, or try flying that thingamajig you built that doesn't look like it'll ever get off the ground!

Learn physics by solving missions and building and refining your inventions. Monster Physics challenges you with 50 missions to solve, from simple to mind-bending. Many missions can be solved with a wide variety of solutions, enabling you to test all sorts of creative approaches.
