Installing Social Plug-Ins on WordPress Sites

If you have built your site in WordPress, there are special instructions for installing Facebook social media buttons on your site. Follow the directions below for a WordPress.org site; these directions do not apply to a WordPress.com blog hosted on the WordPress server. This is something that only a developer should try. Save yourself the grief!

  1. First sign into your WordPress account.

  2. Click the Plugins button in the left navigation.

    You will then be taken to a page that lists all the plug-ins that you have already installed.

  3. Click the Add New button at the top of the page.

    You'll be taken to the Install Plugins page.

  4. Enter a search term such as Facebook Like, Facebook Share, Facebook Comments, or Facebook Recommend in the search box.

  5. Select the plug-in you wish to install by clicking Install Now underneath the plug-in of your choice.

    Since third-party developers supply these plug-ins, you'll probably find multiple choices with ratings for each plug-in.

  6. A prompt appears asking if you are sure you want to install the plug-in. Click OK.

    You'll be taken to a new page with text showing that your plug-in has been installed successfully.

  7. Click Active Plugin.

    The plug-in is now installed and activated. It should appear in the list of installed plug-ins.

  8. To edit the settings of your plug-in, navigate to the bottom of your left hand navigation pane.

    The settings button for your plug-in will either appear in the second tier navigation for Settings, or it'll appear directly underneath the Settings button.

  9. Always, always, always test your results.

    Execute every plug-in you install as if you were a new visitor to your site. Confirm that you see the results in your statistics.
