Increase One Space at the Beginning of a Row in Filet Crochet

Increase spaces and blocks to make filet crochet interesting. To increase one space at the beginning of a row of filet crochet, you must chain enough stitches to make up a space. If you increase at the beginning of a row of filet crochet, you need to increase at the end of the row, too, but the process is a little different for each end.

Here's how to work a 1-space increase at the beginning of a row.

1

At the end of the row that precedes the row you’re going to increase, turn your work.

You position your work for a new row, as usual.

2

Chain (ch) 2 stitches.

This step creates the base of the first increase space.

3

Chain 3 more stitches.

You create the turning chain of the space’s first double crochet (dc) in this step.

4

Chain 2 more stitches.

This step completes the top of the first space.

5

Double crochet in the last double crochet stitch of the previous row.

One increase is complete.

6

Continue across the row from the increase with blocks or spaces.

Consult your pattern to determine what you need to crochet from here.
