iLife ’11: Export an iPhoto Slideshow as a QuickTime Movie File

6 of 12 in Series: The Essentials of Sharing and Presenting Photos with iPhoto

Exporting an iPhoto slideshow as a QuickTime movie file enables you to post the movie on a Web page or include it with other scenes in an iMovie presentation. (QuickTime is sort of a container for multimedia built into every Mac and available to any PC user who knows how to use iTunes; it’s installed with every Windows version of iTunes.)

To put your iLife photo slideshow into a QuickTime file with iPhoto, follow these steps:

  1. Save the slideshow.

If you base your slideshow on a photo album, the slideshow settings are saved with that album. However, you may want to save the slideshow itself — especially if you selected pictures by browsing or if you want to fine-tune the settings and save them permanently.

  2. Click Export.

    The Export dialog appears.

  3. Click Custom Export and choose a QuickTime format.

The Save As dialog box opens, with the Export pop-up menu of format choices. From the pop-up menu, choose Movie to QuickTime Movie or Movie to MPEG-4, depending on which format you want.

  4. Click Options to set QuickTime video and sound options, such as compression settings and filters, and then click OK.

  5. Type a name for the QuickTime movie and choose where to save it on your hard disk, and then click the Save button.

To view the finished movie, open the movie file using QuickTime Player or any other application that plays QuickTime movies. Your slideshow looks like a professional presentation and now you can share it with the world.
