How to Use the Document Map in Word 2007

Document Map feature in Word 2007 enables you to see a quick overview of a document’s structure, especially if you use the Word heading styles.

  1. Click the View tab on the Ribbon and select the Document Map check box in the Show/Hide group.

    A special task pane opens on the left side of the document, summarizing the various heading styles in use.

  2. Click a heading inside the map to instantly jump to that part of your Word 2007 document.

    The Document Map helps you jump to all parts of a document.

    Can you set a default to open a specific document with the document map view but not have subsequent documents open with the document map on. If so, how do you do it?

    The tree structure of the document map is based on Heading1, Heading2, Heading3 in the document text. Highlight the text and then select the style for one of the headers.
