How to Troubleshoot Your Nexus 7 Tablet

Wouldn’t it be great if you could have an avuncular Mr. Wizard–type available to help with your Nexus 7 tablet at a moment’s notice? He could just walk in and, with a happy smile on his face and a reassuring hand on your shoulder, let you know what the problem is and how to fix it. Then he’d give you a cookie.

Never mind that such a thing would be creepy — getting helpful advice is worth it.

How to deal with random Nexus 7 tablet problems

Only the best problems are random and annoying! Here are some typical problems you may encounter on the Nexus 7 tablet and some suggestions for a solution:

Take care of general trouble. For just about any problem or minor quirk, consider restarting the Nexus 7: Turn it off and then turn it on again. This procedure will most likely fix a majority of the problems you encounter.
Check the Wi-Fi connection. Ensure that the Wi-Fi network is set up properly and working. This process usually involves pestering the person who configured the Wi-Fi router or, in a coffee shop, bothering the cheerful person with the bad haircut who serves you coffee.
Reset the Wi-Fi connection. Perhaps the issue isn’t with the Nexus 7 but rather with the Wi-Fi network. Some networks have a “lease time” after which your tablet might be disconnected. If so, turn off the tablet’s Wi-Fi and then turn it on again. This technique often solves the issue.
Music is playing, and you want it to stop. It’s awesome that the Nexus 7 continues to play music while you do other things. Getting the music to stop quickly, however, requires some skill. You can access the play controls for the Play Music app from a number of locations. They’re found on the lock screen, for example. You can also find them by pulling down the notifications shade.
An app has run amok. Sometimes, apps that misbehave let you know. You see a Sorry warning on the screen announcing the app’s stubborn disposition. When that happens, touch the Force Close button to shut down the errant app.
When you see no warning or an app appears to be unduly obstinate, you can shut ’er down the manual way by following these steps:
  1. Open the Settings app.

  2. Choose Apps.

  3. Select the Running category from the top of the screen.

    You can swipe the screen to the left to get to the category from the Downloaded category.

  4. Choose the app that’s causing you distress.

    For example, a program doesn’t start or says that it’s busy or has another issue.

  5. Touch the Stop button.

    The app stops.

  6. After stopping the app, try opening it again to see whether it works.

    If the app continues to run amok, contact its developer: Continue with Step 7. Otherwise, you’ve fixed the problem.

  7. Open the Play Store app.

  8. Touch the My Apps button at the top of the screen.

  9. Choose the app you’re having trouble with.

  10. Scroll down to the Developer section and choose the Send Email item.

  11. Send the developer a message describing the problem.

    Reset the Nexus 7 software. When all else fails, you can do the drastic deed and reset all tablet software, essentially returning it to the state it was in when it first popped out of the box. Obviously, you should not perform this step lightly. In fact, consider finding support before you start the following process:
  12. Start the Settings app.

  13. Choose Backup & Reset.

  14. Choose Factory Data Reset.

  15. Touch the Reset Tablet button.

  16. Touch the Erase Everything button to confirm.

    All the information you’ve set or stored on the Nexus 7 is purged. The purge wipes out apps you’ve downloaded, music, synchronized accounts, everything.

    Again, do not follow these steps unless you’re certain that they will fix the problem or you’re under orders to do so from someone in Tech Support.

You can also choose to reset the Nexus 7’s software and erase everything if you ever return or sell your Nexus 7. Of course, you probably love your Nexus 7 so much that the mere thought of selling it makes you blanch.

How to get support for your Nexus 7 tablet

Before you contact someone about support, it helps to know the device’s ID and Android operating system version number:

  1. At the Home screen, touch the All Apps icon.

  2. Choose Settings.

  3. Choose About Tablet.

    The Nexus 7 model number is listed as well as its Android version.
