How to Tag a Photo on Facebook

Tagging Facebook photos is one of the things that makes Facebook photo albums so useful for everyone. Tags let you mark who is pictured in your photos. Imagine that you took all your photos, printed them, put them in albums, and then created a giant spreadsheet cross-listing the photos and the people in the photos. Then you merged your spreadsheet with all your friends’ spreadsheets. This is what tagging does. When you tag a friend, it creates a link from her Profile to that photo and notifies her that you’ve tagged her. Your friends always have the option to remove a photo tag that they don’t want linked to their account.

Tagging is most commonly used in Photos, but you can also tag friends in Videos, Notes, and even in comments or status updates. All of these little tags allow your friends to know when you’re talking about them (good things, of course) or wanting to talk with them about something.

In addition to the actions you can take on entire album, you can also take actions on individual photos within an album.

If you skipped adding tags when you first posted your album, you can always add your tags to individual photos:

1

From the album view, click the photo you want to tag.

This opens the photo viewer, which is a sort of overlay on top of Facebook

2

In the right side of the top section, click the Tag Photo button.

Facebook uses face recognition technology to try to help you with tags.

3

Click the face of the person you want to tag.

When you hover your mouse over the photo, the cursor turns into a crosshairs icon. When you click a face, it creates a frame and brings up a tagging box

4

Enter the name of the person you want to tag into the text box.

Facebook tries to auto-complete your friend’s name as you type.

5

Repeat until everyone in the photo is tagged and then click Done Tagging.

The original Tag This Photo link has become a Done Tagging link. Click it when you’re done.
