How to Stay Healthy on a Gluten-Free Diet

A gluten-free diet can be just as healthy or unhealthy as a gluten containing diet. It all depends on how you choose to substitute your gluten-containing foods. By replacing foods with a health-conscious mind, you may be healthier than some people who eat gluten.

Follow this simple approach for a healthier gluten-free lifestyle:

  • Watch the carbohydrates, making sure the carbs you’re eating are good carbs — like fruits and vegetables.

  • Try to stick to low-glycemic-load foods, which raise your blood sugar levels gradually.

  • Make sure the foods you eat offer nutritional value. Stay away from foods that are basically empty calories.

  • A Paleolithic approach — eating seafood, lean meats, fruits, and nonstarchy vegetables — is extremely healthful. Modify the diet to meet your personal preferences and needs.

If you eat a gluten-free diet that’s mostly gluten-free “replacement” foods like breads, pizzas, pastas, cookies, brownies, and cakes — and if your “vegetables” consist of rice, corn, potatoes, and the tomatoes in the pasta sauce — then you may have some nutritional concerns. Stick to fresh foods and snacks with protein in them — they will keep you full longer and are healthy.

Good food —fresh produce and other foods without many preservatives — is food that goes bad quickly, so preserve it well.
