How to Specify Access Settings on Your Business’s Facebook Page

3 of 10 in Series: The Essentials of Creating a Facebook Page to Market Your Business

Before you go live with your business’s Facebook Page, you might want to consider limiting the access that certain readers have to your Facebook Page and controlling what actions readers can take when interacting with your Page. To access these settings, you click the Edit Page link below the profile picture on your Page.

Facebook allows you to restrict access to your Facebook Page in a couple of ways:

  • By country: U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, and several others.

  • Age: Anyone (13+); People Older Than 17, 18, 19, or 21; and Alcohol-Related (which represents the legal drinking age where the user resides). Restricting by age is something you may want to consider if you're a local bar or a tobacco brand.

Adjust your Page permission settings:

  1. Click the Edit Page link below the profile picture on your Page.

  2. Click the Manage Permissions tab on the left menu.

  3. Select any settings to restrict access to your Page.

    You can adjust

    • Country Restrictions: List the countries that you want to prohibit from accessing your business’s Facebook Page.

    • Age Restrictions: Make a selection if you want to restrict access to your Page based on the user's age.

    • Wall Tab Shows: Choose between All Posts or Page to determine what posts appear on the Wall.

    • Wall Spam Filter: Select whether the spam tools on your Wall are visible to the Page admin or hidden.

    • Default Landing Tab: From this drop-down list, select the tab a user will land on. The default landing tab is set to Wall, but you can change it to any tab. This is a good way to test different landing pages to see which one is most effective.

    • Posting Ability: Check the appropriate boxes to allow anyone to post comments, photos, and videos to your Wall. If you’re in a heavily restricted industry, such as the pharmaceutical industry, and have a specific legal requirement to maintain control of your message, you might want to restrict your visitor’s ability to contribute.

    • Delete Page: By clicking this link, you permanently delete your Page.

  4. When you’re finished, click the Save Changes button.
