How to Sign Up for Twitter

1 of 8 in Series: The Essentials of Getting Connected and Communicating on Twitter

After you sign up for an account with Twitter — a simple, yet powerful microblogging tool — you can start sending out short instant messages and gathering followers for your tweets. Here's how you sign up for Twitter:

1

Navigate to the Twitter Web site.

The Twitter splash page appears.

2

Click the Sign Up button.

The sign-up page appears.

3

Enter your desired username and basic information in the appropriate text boxes.

The only information Twitter requires is a username, a password, and a unique e-mail address where Twitter can contact you for notifications.

4

Click Create My Account.

By clicking Create My Account, you're agreeing to Twitter's Terms of Service. You see a link at the bottom of the page where you can read those Terms of Service if you like, or you can go to http://twitter.com/tos to read them. You go to your Twitter home page.

5

Follow someone with similar interests.

Type a topic that interests you in the Search box and press Enter, or click one of the topics in the list. You'll see a list of Twitterers you can follow; click the Follow button next to one who looks interesting. Twitter recommends following 10 to start.

6

Click Who to Follow at the top, and then click the Find Friends tab.

On the interface that appears, Twitter lets you choose friends you might like to follow based on your e-mail Contacts lists. You can choose Friends from your Windows Live Hotmail and Messenger Accounts, Yahoo!, Gmail, AOL, and LinkedIn. Or you can click Skip Import if you don't want to find friends from any of these accounts.

7

If you want to Twitter to comb your Contacts list, choose a list to import, click Grant Access, and then follow your friends.

Having Twitter automatically find your contacts involves entering your e-mail account password. Although Twitter has established itself as a trustworthy service, in general, be cautious about sites that ask you for your e-mail address and password.

If you skip this step during the registration process, you can always come back to it or search for people by first name, last name, or e-mail address by clicking the Who to Follow link at the top of any Twitter page.

8

Write your first tweet.

After you choose friends to follow, you're taken to your newly created Twitter account, where you can click the What's Happening? box and tweet your first message (in 140 characters or less).
