How to Set Up iCloud on Your Mac

When you have a good idea of what iCloud is and what it can do, it’s time to set it up on your Mac. Check out these steps if you didn’t sign up for iCloud when given the chance the first time you turned on your Mac. Meanwhile, if you’ve already set up an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to work with iCloud, you’re ahead of the game.

Either way, proceed to Step 1:

  1. In System Preferences, select iCloud.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • If you already have an Apple ID and password that you want to use for iCloud on the Mac, enter it in the fields provided.

    • If not, click Create an Apple ID. You have to provide your location and birthday to establish an Apple ID.

  3. Sign in.

  4. Decide whether to accept the default setting Use iCloud for Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Notes, and Safari, as well as the default setting Use Find My Mac, and then click Next.

    It’s usually not a good idea to deselect any of the defaults. Besides, you can always change your mind later, and as you see in Step 6, you can select and deselect iCloud options for specific apps and features.

  5. Enter your Apple ID and password if you want to take advantage of iCloud Keychain.

    As a security measure, you have to request approval from another device using this iCloud Keychain.

  6. Select check boxes to select the items you want to use with iCloud: Contacts, Calendars & Reminders, Safari, and so on.

    Note the specific options and scroll down to see more options.

If everything went according to plan, your contacts, calendars, mail, notes, reminders, and so on turn up at iCloud.com. It’s not a bad idea to log on to make sure.
