How to Set Up the Windows Sidebar in Windows Vista

Setting up your Sidebar in Windows Vista allows you to display the Sidebar in a specific location on your computer. Your Sidebar in Windows Vista is a valuable tool that allows you to access specific information, such as weather, time, the calendar, or your favorite Sudoku game, in an instant without a lot of flipping through windows. Get your Sidebar for Windows Vista set up by following these steps.

1

Right-click the Windows Sidebar icon.

You can find the Windows Sidebar icon on the Windows taskbar.

2

Choose Properties.

Choosing Properties opens the Windows Sidebar Properties dialog box.

3

Select the Sidebar Is Always on Top of Other Windows check box and click OK.

If you like, you can also enable Start Sidebar When Windows Starts to ensure that the Sidebar always displays when you start your computer.

4

Click the Close button.

Clicking Close will close the Control Panel window, and the Sidebar will appear.

If you’re left-handed, or have some other propensity for things on the left, you can choose to have the Sidebar displayed on the left side of the screen by selecting the Left radio button in the Windows Sidebar Properties dialog box.

Once you’ve made your sidebar settings, the quickest way to display them in the future is to click the Windows Sidebar icon on the Windows taskbar.

I have no idea what this 'tip' means! It might help if you showed us what a sidebar icon looks like. As usual 'Dummies' gives us va tip that is not fully explained, so only experts can figure them out!

The Sidebar icon looks like a little computer screen with three different-colored square "thingies" attached to the right side of it. You'll find it in the notification area at the far right side of the taskbar (if you have it anchored to the bottom of the screen). You might need to click the left arrow over there to see all the icons in that area. Hover your cursor over the icon to see a tool tip and find out if you've picked the right one.
