How to Set up the Fax Modem on Your Laptop

The fax machine on your laptop is really nothing more than a remote printer. Although it's the modem's hardware that carries out the faxing, you need to look for your laptop’s fax machine in the list of Printers: from the Start menu, open the Control Panel, and then open the Printers or Printers and Faxes icon.

  • If you see a fax machine or anything named Fax in the list of printers, you're all ready to go.

  • Note that although the fax machine appears as an icon in the list of printers, you don’t use that icon to send a fax.

  • If you don't see a fax machine in Windows Vista, your copy of Windows Vista may not come with faxing abilities; you need to get a third-party fax program for your modem.

  • To add the fax printer to Windows XP, click the link, on the left side of the Printers and Faxes window, that says Install a Local Fax Printer. Heed the directions to complete the task.
